Solved Trying to resolve 0x80070246 error

Hi and thanks for taking my question.

I am trying to update Vista 32 and keep getting a download error 0x80070246.

I have followed the instructions on this page http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942968

My problem is Widows has denied my access. I have tried to change the security settings to allow the replacement of the file, but once again Windows will not let me.

When I follow the directions on the support page I get an access denied error. I have tried to copy the file from the CD directory to the Windows directory, as well. But I can't get access.

I am a single owner of this PC and I have no passwords set, so I’m not sure why I can't change the administrative privileges.

Any help would be appreciated,
Jim

I'm sure you are owner of this computer ;) that isn't equivalent you are owner of all folders in Vista -no.You must know the owner of many folders in Vista/7 is TrustedInstaller not Administrators group and Admins don't have full control for all folders, and only owners can change permissions

1.Takeownership the folder C:\Windows\WinSxS and add your account to have full control
2.Do everything what MS say in this link
3.When you'll do all MS suggestions you should restore oryginal permissions otherwise you may have another issue with WU in future too.

-Remove your account from permissions to WinSxS folder
-Restore ownership of Packages folder back to "NT Service\TrustedInstaller"

Hello, had that problem too, tried what you wrote but no, it did'nt worked.
I then tried to use the tutorial Brink posted to make a Repair Install For Vista. I think it may help someone that has the same problem and can't solve it.

Thanks Brink, and thank you Flavius, without your links I would'nt found Brik tutorials.!
