Unable to add attachments in Windows Mail

M

Martyboy

#1
I am running Windows Vista Home Premium.
When I open up a new email and click the paperclip to add an attachment,
Windows Mail instantly shuts down, giving no error reports.
I did manage to eventually send the attachment by going to the file and
selecting the "Attach to Email" option.

Any ideas why clicking the paperclip should shutdown Windows Mail?

Thanks

Thanks Steve.
Turned off email scanning in Mc Affee antivirus. problem still the same.
Then tried removing email account, shutting down Windows Mail, and adding
email account, as per your reference website. Unfortunately still have the
problem

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Turning off email scanning in McAfee is seldom sufficient to eliminate all
bad effects.

If the problem continues, the only way you can prove or disprove that
McAfee is the culprit is to uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

If you decide to replace McAfee, we can recommend a free antivirus
program which is more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of overly intrusive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

As Gary indicates, you may need to get rid of McAfee completely and get
something less invasive and disfunctional.

Thanks for your advice.
I have totally removed Mc Affee by using the uninstall and Mc Affee removal
tool as you suggested but the problem still remains.

I have also found that I cannot "add files" to Windows DVD Maker, as program
becomes unresponsive. I am however able to "drag" files into the program.

It is troublesome that your DVD Maker program is also misbehaving,
as this may point to a common underlying Vista issue. We can't go
into the DVD Maker in this forum which is dedicated to Windows Mail.

Your best bet at this point is to try upgrading to Windows Live Mail:

At last I think I've cracked it.
I created a "new user" and as long as I log on as the new user all appears
to be well.

You're very welcome. Thanks for reporting back.
Sounds like Windows Mail for the old user had become corrupt.

As the old user, you might try deleting the mail account, closing and
reopening Winmail and then adding it back again.
