Windows Live Messenger 8.1 Application Sharing

J

JVF

After downloading/installing Windows Live Messenger 8.1 using HotMail
accounts for the Windows Live ID's & starting a Call to a Computer, I
attempted to use Application Sharing & received an error message that
Application Sharing was not installed or disabled.
Any idea how to enable Application Sharing for Windows Live Messenger 8.1
that was downloaded from the Microsoft web site?

Greetings JVF,

You need Windows Messenger 5.1 installed as well (that's what the error message is
complaining about, incorrectly).
http://microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8d9eb73-5f8c-4b9a-940f-9157a3b3d774

After that's installed, it should work in Windows Live Messenger 8.1.

DO NOT INSTALL 5.1.

I installed it, and I'm now looking at my monitor at 800x600 in safe mode with networking. My Vista (x64 Business SP1) went into a nasty reboot cycle, where I'd login and it keeps saying "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute". The 5.1 uninstaller didn't work. I'm trying to kill it manually now. I'll try and post again if I get vista back under control, hopefully Windows 7 is Vista + Stability.

Greetings,

The only Messenger 5.1 version is Windows Messenger 5.1 which is not compatible with Vista,
although it shouldn't cause any real harm bypassing any compatibility warnings.

I suggest you do a system restore. To do so, put in the original Vista disc and boot off it.
Once the installer starts, click 'Repair my computer' and follow the instructions.

Based on the problem above with v5.1 not coexisting with v8.1 Should we
conclude that application sharing in Windows Live Messenger 8.1 does not work
then?

If it does where can we we download v5.1 and how shoudl it be installed to
avoid the probelms above.

Application sharing was a really useful function for collaboartive working
and providing support to frineds family etc.

Thanks

Greetings Spencer,

They coexist fine if you configure them correctly. However, Windows Messenger is no longer
supported and Windows Live Messenger 8.1 I'm afraid is rather ancient as well.

However, Remote Assistance is still in Messenger, still in Windows and is fully backward
compatible from Windows 7 to XP. Additionally, you'll find other free tools which can do the
same from other vendors.
