Windows Live Sync is Live!

What a joke. So here I am using Foldershare in a business setting. I
have multiple computers in disparate locations. My group and I rely on
Foldershare.

I wake up today to find that Foldershare no longer works. I have to
use Synch. I can't log in to the foldershare website. I accept the
prompt to "upgrade" to Synch, and of course it cannot connect to the
server. On the synch site, which I assume is the equivalent of the
foldershare site, none of my libraries exist. As if I had never been
using folder share.

In the meantime I am unable to synch files with my workgroup until I
take time away from running my business to hopefully get things back
to the way they were.

Thanks (sarcasm) for the grace period, thanks (sarcasm) for the
warnings so that I could set aside time to make the changeover at my
timetable.

This is not an auspicious start to Windows Live Synch.

Exact same thing here. No notice, no warning, no sign of my folders in the
Live Sync interface and the client won't connect. What a joke.

Same with me - though I happened to see the notice a week ago saying this was going to happen, since then I have just been waiting for the axe to fall . . .
and today, surprise surprise, I try the migration and it doesn't work.

I downloaded the windowslivesync file - and it hung saying it was installing. didn't respond to cancel, had to ctrl-alt-del to close it out. . . .

what do we do now?

BTW - I am installling on a brand new plain-vanilla Dell with Vista Busines, no funny business / major legacy issues etc. if it doesn't work for me, then who DOES it work for?

Mac version of Foldershare stopped working today without any notice.

I downloaded the new Mac version of Live Sync app as instructed, but get an error message that it's an outdated version.

Were there any human beings involved in this transition? Seems amazing that something so obvious would be missed.

I don't believe these are isolated cases. I think anyone who has a vista is
able to sync just fine while mac and xp -- with vista as an additional or
primary computer on the network -- are unable with the same recurring error.
I wouldn't complain at all, IF I could go back to the foldershare option
instead of only making live sync available. This is a terribly botched
service/roll-out which has caused me to loose a whole days worth of work.
Granted, I never thought I was so dependent on foldershare and I'm impressed
that this product was developed to serve my business needs. However, now I am
going to look for alternatives which can fulfill my needs without taking
"possibly a week" to get back online.

very unhappy

Update..

So after spending several hours (time that I was supposed to be doing other things) installing Live Synch, Ive now got several libraries/folders where I know Ive set up a particular computer to synch to that library, yet it does not show as a connect machine on the web site. So I have to keep paper notes to remind myself which computers have been added to which libraries.

In addition some libaries that I renamed, and that show up with the proper name on the website, show up on SOME clients as something cryptic like "Documents (You)". Not very helpful.

Whereas folder share was NOT beta, no matter what they called it, it is clear that Live Synch IS beta, not ready for prime time at that. Of course since Foldershare was unceremoniously shut down for many of us with no opportunity to migrate at a time of OUR choosing, we now have no choice and are stuck with this Live Synch which is yet another step backwards in the sad evolution of FolderShare. I winder if the Bytetaxi people are reading these posts and are the least bit unhappy at what became of their baby !?

This was fixed early this morning. You should be able to sign-in fine now.

OK - to be fair, I now I have WLS up and running.

VISTA: The install hang problem persisted, so I cancelled, restarted, and on restart I tried again this time successfully installed.

MAC: With my MBP laptop I had different issues - the old version of FS didn't uninstall so at one point I had both icons there and both programs running which was a bit weird, but I uninstalled FS manually, and they are now synching as before.

BOTH: Only disconcerting thing / question I have is that both arrows on the Live Sync icon are permanently blue on my Vista machine, implying it is transferring / using bandwidth non-stop, while the two arrows on the Mac are permanently greyed out implying it is not connected. Or at least that was the convention with the old FS (grey vs colour = connected vs not).

I guess this is a small point compared to the migration issues I had earlier, and now it is synching I can't complain. or at least I can complain, but I am greatly relieved it is working again.

You could have made a transition phase with letting only a limited
number of accounts switched - time by time.

This would have been easier for us all.

Well, FWIW, I've upgraded it on five Vista computers, and one XP computer,
and it worked great on all of them.

When I connect to my company's VPN, I get this message:

This causes Live Sync to completely forget the credentials I had asked it to save, and it requires me to re-enter Live ID. I must do this every time I connect/disconnect to my company's VPN.

Isn't this a little silly? Anyone know how to communicate this problem to the Live Sync team?
