I cannot open any attachments in Windows Mail. Each time I try, I get (not
responding). Any suggestions?

See www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#1 and that probably won't help so see #3
which may or may not. If it doesn't then try uninstally you AV software
completely and many have reported that that has resolved the problem. Then
get a less invasive AV product.

In Windows Mail go to Tools, Options, Security and uncheck

"Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a
virus."

I don't think you understand the problem. It isn't security stopping the
attachment from being opened. The Windows Mail program just stops working
completely. It has to be shut down and restarted. When I click on the red
"X", it tries to look for a solution for the problem. Of course, there
doesn't seem to be one. I don't get any message after that. No message
about security not allowing the attachment to be opened.

In last night's reply, Steve advised you to uninstall your AV program
(see http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 ).
Did you try that?

AV stands for antivirus program. You need to disable or uninstall it.

I uninstalled my antivirus program. I also went to Windows Mail, Tools,
Options, Security and unchecked "Do not allow attachments to be saved or
opened that could potentially be a virus. I restarted my computer after
uninstalling AV. Also after removing email account, before adding it again.
Still cannot open attachments.

And so when you try to save one Windows Mail shuts down? Is that what the
scenario is?

Is it all attachments or just some kinds?

Can you save the attached image from this message?

it is all attachements. I haven't tried to save attached images. The
attachment sometimes is just a forwarded email. Sometimes other types of
attachments to view.

Try removing your mail account. Close and reopen WinMail and then add it

How would your pc be protected if you disabled or uninstalled your anti-virus
program? I am having the same problem except Windows Mail doesn't open at
all. At the top where it says Windows Mail, it has (not responding) out
beside it and I have to shut it down through the Task Manager. It is VERY
frustrating since I use e-mail for 90% of my work and I can't get in there.
Windows mail has given be nothing but a bunch of headaches!!!! PLEASE HELP!!
:)

For troubleshooting purposes, uninstall your antivirus temporarily.
After your mail program is working again, install a non-intrusive
antivirus such as the free Avast.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Beside that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail.

You are new to this thread. Please tell us YOUR problem, including the
exact wording of any error messages.

Not responding does not necessarily mean it's not doing anything. Does Task
Manager say it is using any CPU cycles? Have you tried waiting five
minutes?

I have the exact same problem. I hope someone has some other suggestions.
Windows mail just stops responding and wants to either shut down or restart
when you try to open the attachments.

Did you read the part you quoted below:
