Windows Movie Maker - no video in .avi files

#1
Hi, I'm having trouble with Windows Movie Maker. When I import .avi files into the program, only the sound is imported, but the video part is not.

I have tested this with .wmv files and there is no problem. Pictures and sound files import correctly as well.

I have ticked all the boxes in Tools > Options > Compatibility

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I wonder if the following codec
package would improve the issue?

Thanks John, I too just realized it was a codec issue. Both videos that I had tested were encoded and my computer doesn't have the required codecs. Thanks for the link.

You're welcome.

If you try the codec package let us know the result.

I am having the same problem, with my .avi files only being recognized as
audio. I went to the site you recommended, but can find no link to download
the software. Where can one do this on the major geek site? I don't see a
shopping cart or download option on the link that is given. Any help would be
appreciated.

Thanks

Hello everyone, I am also having the same problem as posted above. In which AVI formats within Windows Movie Maker play only audio. I have Downloaded and installed the suggested Codec package, but my problem still exists. I am now also getting an error message of "xvidcore.dll no found" whenever I move an AVI into the timeline or import the file. I have tried various things to fix this, however I could not find a sound way to convert AVI format into WMV. The video part of the AVIs play on my VLC player, so I know that they do in fact exist. If someone could respond to this, possibly by means of e-mail would be fine that would be great. Also a list of possible things that I may need would be amazing, as I have just recently reinstalled Vista. A post haste response to this would be nice, as it is needed for a school project.

I've got the same problem with audio and no video with AVI files in WMM. I've tried the suggested and confirmed workin method of installing the Vista Codec Package as posted by John. However, I still get the problem with no video and am now getting the error message "xvidcore.dll no found" when putting AVIs into the timeline, or when importing them. A response to this direct to my email would be nice, however I still try to stay posted here.

This indicates that the uninstall of the XVID codec was broken. This is due
to a bad third party codec installer or uninstaller. Whatever you were
using is/was broken. Unfortunately only they know what they were crazily
doing here. =\

It troubles me when people suggest installing a hat full of codec that aren't needed...they tend to cause more problems than they are worth when conflicts occur (frequently) when it's a matter of only downloading the one required codec will do.

Avi extensions are wrapper files that could mean the video file is compressed with unusual codec combinations.

Often the source of the avi files should state what codecs are needed and if you are not sure don;t use the video file....or invest in software that can tell you the codec required to play it.

I have the same problem and i tried the suggested codec it didn't fix my problem. I do not get any error messages it just puts my avi as audio still. is there somthing else i have to do. and is it a certian type of AVI files that do this? the files work in windows media player and they did ever before i installed the codec. so far i see now changes when installing this codec.

is this a 64 bit issue? if so is there a special 64 bit codec?

There are special 64 bit Vista codecs available. I suggest you examine the microsoft Vista 64 Website.

There are over 800 AVI video file types...there is no point in me trying to guess which one is yours..

I'm having the same problem. Unfortunately, I've spent a good several hours now scouring for a fix and have had no luck after trying things mentioned in this thread and elsewhere.

Specifially:

I recorded a video with Xfire. It is in a .avi format. I'm running 64 bit Home Premuim and I'm attempting to import and edit the video in Movie Maker. I'm getting the error that WMM can't import it because I'm missing a codec.

"... .avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Same...but you should be able to learn more about your because you know the source of your capture. Somewhere on the xfire website (or software) you should be able to find out the specific codec used in compressing the avi video. perhaps e-mailing xfire might be productive too as they should be able to point you in the right direction.

I am also having the video issue - trying to view .avi files in WIndows Media
Player in Vista. I did already download the codec, after leaving a donation,
but I still don't see all of the pictures. I am hoping it is now just a
problem at the video creator's end...I also did purchase and run the full
version of Registry Mechanic 8. Let me know if there is anything else!!
Thank you!!

Which specific AVI codec does that AVI use?
Is this 32bit or 64bit Vista?

That's seemingly a complete shot in the dark that encourages poor
problem-solving techniques. Why not try to deal with the problem directly
so that when the next Random Codec comes around they can handle it
themselves? =)
