WLM & PPS FILES

This isn't a major issue but I'd like to understand what's happening and fix
it if possible.

Today I received an email with a .pps attachment. When trying to open it
from within WLM, I got the following error:

" This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an
association in the Default Programs control panel."

I do not have Microsoft Office, but I do have the document viewers for Word,
Excel and PowerPoint. None of these applications show in the Default
Programs control panel. I don't know why except that the really aren't
programs, but "Windows Photo Viewer" does show. How is that any different.

I was able to save the attachment to my desktop and open it there either by
double-clicking or by right-clicking and opening with Microsoft Office
PowerPoint Viewer. I also noticed that the check box to "always use the
selected program to open this kind of file" was checked so the proper file
association appears to be proper.

I did test ".doc and .xls" attachments by sending attachments to myself and
they open just fine from within WLM. I don't know what the .pps problem is.
Is there way to resolve this issue so that I can open this type of file
directly from within WLM.

WLM - 14.0.8064.0206
Microsoft Office Power Point Viewer 2007 - 12.0.6425.1000
Microsoft Office Excel Viewer - 12.0.6425.1000
Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003 - 11.0.8173.0 (I don't know why this one
is different)

Thanks,

Opening files is an OS thing, so it would have been helpful if you'd mentioned which OS you're using. See if the link helps: it applies to WLMail as well.

Bruce & Noel,

Sorry about forgetting to mention that I'm running Windows 7 - 64bit. I
mentioned about everything else but forgot this one.

Anyway, both of you guys referred me to the same place and the fix works
great. Thanks for your help.

God, I love having access to these newsgroups. I got a correct answer within
15 minutes, in English and without getting "cauliflower ear" waiting on
hold.

Thanks again,

One other suggestion not mentioned (not related to the fix for your issue) .
.. . . You are running the older version of WLMail. Consider downloading the
latest version, 14.0.8089.0726, and installing it.

I have been reading posts on this problem dating back to 2004 and none of the
"fixes" have helped me. I am running XP Home, SP3 and I have Windows Live
Mail "The latest version". I Have downloaded the latest version of Power
Point Viewer "2010" and I still have to save the e mail attachment and then
manually open the .pps file. I have the same problem if I am trying to use
Outlook Express. It seems that Microsoft builds problems into their programs
to try to force you to buy the expensive software packages like "Office". I
am a home user and I cannot justify spending $400.00 for a software package
just to be able to read and enjoy e mails. Since this problem has plagued
users for years, one would think that Microsoft would have addressed this
problem in the newest version of PPV.

PowerPoint Viewer 2010 is a recent release. I would suggest using PPV 2007
until someone like Ramesh Srinivasan comes to the rescue and creates a fix
for this latest mess my Microsoft.

PowerPoint Viewer 2007:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...40-14E1-467D-8DCA-19D2A8FD7485&displaylang=en

And then apply the fix you saw for this PPV version.
