TOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure): how to fix it in Vista Ulti

Final release Vista Ultimate took a long time calculating remaining time to
copy a file. when I rebooted, I got the blue screen with this message:
    TOP: c0000218 (registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):
SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

How do I recover the registry from a possible automatic system registry
backup file somewhere in the hard drive? Windows repair could not fix the
problem. Or, how to extract this bad registry file from the Vista DVD to its
directory? Or do I have to reinstall vista again. I am at the 2nd install.
    Thanks!

I have exactly the same issue. Vista Ultimate 64. BSOD STOP c0000218
{registry file failure} \systemRoot\system32\config\security or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.
I am on my second install also.
    I have the GIABYTE GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3) MOBO + 4GB RAM and a 8800GTS PCI-E GPU. 2 segate SATA2 HDD in a mirror (RAID 1)

I am using all the latest drivers for everything. Does anyone have any idea on what is going on?

I have managed to stop the BSOD. Instead of using 4 sticks of RAM I now only use 2.
The machine has NEVER Blue screened since using 2 sticks of 1GB instead of 4 x 1GB. It does not matter which 2 sticks I use or what slots they go in... As soon as I use 4 sticks.... BSOD. Anyone got any ideas?

    Hey,

I have the exact same problem aswell.

I am using Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

When I have 4x 1GB sticks of RAM, I get this error.

BUT... When I use 2x 1GB sticks of RAM it works fine.

    Does anyone have a solution???

    Thanks.

    Hello cooncheese70

What are the details of your setup? Do we have the same MOBO ?

    Hey Mick,

    Setup is as follows:

    Mobo - Gigabyte P35-DQ6 (Rev 1.0)
    GPU - Gigabyte 2900XT
    HDD - 320GB SATA2

Have you found a solution to this yet??

    Thanks.

    Hello cooncheese70

    My Setup is as follows:

    Mobo - Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3)
    GPU - Nvidia 8800GTS 320MB
    HDD - 2 x 320GB SATA2 Segate
    RAM - 1GB Sticks (x4) 1.8v 800MHZ 5.5.5.12

I have been running with 2 sticks in slots 1 + 2 and also 2 sticks in just slots 3 + 4 without any problems. As soon as I go to 4 x 1 GB, or within one or two reboots I get the BSOD.
I have nothing overclocked. At the moment I have returned all my hardware to the shop, Novatech.co.uk as the Mobo does make a long beep on POST, it makes me think there is a hardware problem with it.
I will let you know how I get on.

Re: STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure)

I have now got my MOBO back from Novatech. They changed all 4 memory modules, I turned it on and got the BSOD. I then removed 2 sticks, and it works fine. I really think there is an issue with the MOBO. Other than changing it I am not sure what else I can do.

    HA HA...

    4 days running 4 GB installed (4 x 1GB) and NO BSOD!

I should of noticed this before but there you go..
Right this is how it works for me:
    1. Enter the BIOS and go to MB Intelligent Tweaker (M.I.T) screen
    2. There is one option in here called High speed DRAM DLL Settings. I changed this from Option 1 to Option 2.
    3. I then rebooted with 4 GB and have not had a BSOD since.( 4 days and loads of reboots and restarts)

Try it, see how you get on.

    Much relived Mick
