Surprise! Internet Users Dislike Broadband Cap

Surprise! Internet Users Dislike Broadband Cap
Written by Kevin Parrish - 2:20 AM - October 2, 2008

It’s no secret that internet service providers are considering Broadband caps to cut down costs. However many U.S. consumers dislike the idea and will gladly change carriers if their current BSP implements the restrictions.

ZoomIn Zeugma Systems’ recent survey conducted for the International Data Corporation (source), 81 percent of the 787 U.S. customers polled proclaimed their dislike for a Bandwidth cap and the additional charges for internet use beyond the limit. However, 83 percent had no idea what a gigabyte was or just how much bandwidth they actually consume. 51 percent of those polled added that they would actually switch service providers if broadband caps were set in place. Some even claimed to actually pay for additional premium services if necessary.

"These results are both an opportunity and a warning for BSPs," said Kevin Walsh, Zeugma Systems vice president of marketing. "The opportunity is that consumers are signaling a willingness to pay more for dedicated bandwidth over and above basic high speed internet for such services as premium internet video, VOIP, gaming, and corporate VPN access. The warning is a clear distaste for bandwidth caps. At a minimum, providers moving forward with bandwidth capping schemes may want to consider a more intelligent and flexible application of caps.”

Starting today, Comcast residential customers are now limited to 250 GB per month. The company claims that the new limit is more than enough for its customers, and will more than likely never surpass the limit. But considering the consumers who purchases games and movies online, this restriction may feel more like a punishment than means to save money on behalf of the BSP. Online Gamers may face the largest setback, especially those playing on Microsoft’s Xbox Live service or MMORPGs like World of Warcraft and EverQuest II.

What a shocker lol.

If Time Warner caps it by me I am out and will be looking for someone else.

We pay enough as it is and should not be limited regardless if you reach it or not.

Can't let these big companies get away with everything they please.

And I will be more than happy to give my $40+ to someone else!

Australia has never had 'unlimited' downloads only 'unlimited'.........In fine print (hours)

Always had caps here and there like 20gb onpeak/ 20gb offpeak for $80 a month

My Computer

In the UK there are only a few left who do not cap, so we are pretty much s*****d if you are in a contract, all you can do is wait it out and then change.

But sometimes it is worth buying out your contract just to get rid of bad service.

I'm on a plan that has no caps, mind you can't get my email from them at the moment as they have major problems with the email servers, been down for a couple of days :(

Trouble is where I am there's no chance of cable in the area, a bit like gas we can't get that either

At least I'm not with BT, they were expensive when I first went online and that was dial up, I didn't even bother when I went ADSL as I'd already gone with another landline provider so went with another broadband supplier and not had any problems really, sitting here with three computers behind the router. ;)

Here in the UK,"Throttling" is now a way of life,I am afraid. In the "old days",when Broadband was "snail pace",you could basically download what you wanted, for the monthly fee.But now-thanx Richard!! :sarc:,you have to keep an eye on those "media" downloads.

Still,in the days of "good old dial up",you could make a coffee, quicker than it took for a web page to load.Only a week ago,I was upgraded from 4meg,to 10meg,but even so,it can be slow at peak times. And even that is "snail speed" to a lot of the world.Oh for a 100meg,unlimited download!!

When companies like Comcast have a virtual monopoly in most areas, there's not much the consumer can do when they unilaterally declare limits, caps or whatever. Moving to Verizon DSL sort of defeats the purpose...

Capping is a joke...I don't understand how an ISP can think of doing that when their service is basically crap compared to other countries. I spend a lot of time in Japan and a friend of mine pays about $60 a month for a 100mbs fiber optic connection. I don't know what the ISP's use as an excuse for raping people...If my friend can have a fiber optic line in his WWII era apartment, why can't we get the same here?

We American's have to get our heads out of our !@# and realise that USA is falling behind other Asian nations.

It is sad, but true. We do have the slowest internet connections on average than most other countries.

Why is that? Is is that we are so big and so many miles of cable need to be ran and just makes advancing that much slower?

I mean the UK, Japan etc don't have that much land to cover lol.

Comcast implemented caps in my area a month or so ago. I download movies and what not but have never went over 250GB. I'm sure when files get larger the cap will go up as well because soon enough the average user will hit the 250GB cap anyway.

just to give you guys a bit of perspective on how great your internet sounds to people in Australia.

Here's a rough top limit of the highend plans from the 3 biggest ISP's we have here.

internode - $99.95/month 55Gb Cap
iinet - $139.90/month 60Gb peak ( 80Gb offpeak ) Cap
BigPond - $149.95/month 60GB Cap

BigPond actually dont cap there's, they charge you at 15c per Mb over when you reach your monthly quota. They love getting money out of non savvy users that way.

LOL! I know why India is way down there! Take my own ISP: The first national ISP ever which is now jointly owned by a huge conglomerate: The Tata Group.

My "supposed to be broadband" plan: INR 2242 per month [48 US$ approx] prepaid account for three months with actual balance of INR 1995 [42 US$ approx] {The rest is service tax.
Speed: 128 kilobits per second. But they have put me in a NAT zone so all ports are blocked adn Torrents don't work. What's more is taht I really don't know what is the type of my internet connection; PPPoE or Cable because I have no ADSL router. Just a CAT5 LAN wire getting plugged into my motherboard.

That, folks is the situation in India!

Of course there are higher speed plans and Telco's providing them but they'll suck you dry with their horrific billing systems! That said, I believe the highest bandwidth Internet connection any normal consumer could get is 2Mbps or 5Mbps at the most which would be way way up there in terms of price.

Oh! and did I mention the laugable download limits? Here:
Plan: 256kbps min. upto 2Mbps
Download limit: 400 MB only
Rate: 329 INR [ US$ 7 approx. ]
Rate after limit expires: 1 INR per MB [ US$ 0.021 approx; Sorry! Don't know how to break that up into cents or sumthing else!]

The least amount of bill I have heard from any of my friends on this supposed to be cheap plan is INR 5000 [ US$ 106 ] which is a heat attack for most of us students as we aren't earning anything yet!

I hope we get out of this hell-hole! SOS!!!!

I have Time Warner buisness class at my house, not that much more than residential (OK, I have even went top tier in buisness class - thats a bit more), no caps, static IP's, no blocked ports...
