7 updates? 1!/2 hours and still not finished?

Hi All, I got a notice for 7 updates for Vista 64 earlier this evening so I set about installing them with the wizards. It's taken over 2 hours and still not finished. I got "configuring the updates" for about 45 minutes and then "shutting down" for another 45 so I figured something wasn't right so I did a hard shutdown and booted into Ubuntu 64 to post this.
Is there something wrong or is everyone else taking this long?

Definitely something weird going on. I finally got my desktop back but my mouse pointer was jerking around the screen. I went to this forum from Opera and was writing this reply when Vista decided to log off and shut down.
I started again and booted into safe mode, ran Opera, came to this forum. Fine. Didn't know what to look for really so I rebooted normally and that's where I'm at. I've been at these wretched updates all night.
Am I the only one with this problem? Are these genuine MS updates?

...odd. I've got 6 restart-required updates that won't install for some weird reason...they're not stopping me from doing anything, but this is the first problem I've ever had with updates...

Well, for me the list is:

Security Update (KB941644)
Three other plain Updates (KB943411, KB943302, KB943899)
A junk e-mail filter update (KB905866)
And an update for my nVidia GPU which I shouldn't need since I downloaded the latest ForceWare already...

Well I got all the ones Caledo mentions plus another general one. After sitting all evening and then booting into Ubuntu to make my initial post I booted Vista again and it seemed like I was starting from scratch again and had to wait for another hour and a half. Eventually it booted but I now have uncontrollable mouse syndrome.
After the hours of waiting I needed to sleep and so shutdown. Igot one of those "installing 1 update, do not power off" notices. I sat for half an hour waiting for the system to shut down before getting fed up switching off the monitor and going to bed.
This morning it was off and when I startd up I got a "please wait, configuring update" notice. This took another half hour.
I'm confused. Is this SP1? If so I'm not impressed. Both my mouse and keyboard seem to have a mind of their own and everything is really slow.
What is MS up to? Luckily I've got Ubuntu on a dual boot and that runs like a rocket but this is dreaful. I'm having trouble typing as the space bar keeps failing and the mouse is no longer accurate. Playing Half-Life ( a Christmas present)should be fun. This is a good way to force people over to Linux.
Does anyone know what is going on?Is it SP1?

This is a disaster. I can't shut down and have to use the power button and everything seems slightly wrong. My mouse (MS Laser 5000) is all over the place, my monitor (Samsung 226BW) is not performing as well as it was and it's all really slow.
I checked my updates and note that one of them failed last night (a reliability update ironically) so presumably that's what went on this morning but what about all the other problems and not being able to shut down. One of them updates is for Vista Ultimate and cannot be removed!
Frankly I'm disgusted. Why is nobody from MS explaining what is happening?
This must not be a general problem or surely the forums would be blazing.

Congratulations Vista strikes again ! "If you want stability install win. XP or Linux"
Horses for courses!
I am a real all rounder. I triple boot XP Vista and Linux flavours. XP is well known for its stablity, Vista I am having no stability problems with. Over the past two years, I have tried 6 different flavours of Linux. I have never managed to keep one of them stable for more than a week. I have also never yet found drivers, other than poor generics, for 20% of my hardware.

Davehc. Thanks for your contribution but I'm not interested in a Linux vs. Windows debate. There's plenty of those on all kinds of forums and there all pretty pointless imo.
What I keep asking and nobody's answering is - what is happening to my pc?
My Vista 64x installation has been rock solid, reliable and reasonably fast (if a bit of a resource hog) for about 5 months.
I get these updates, install them in good faith and I'm now struggling in every way.
Is this SP1 for Vista 64 or not and am I the only person having problems with it?
I'd appreciate a proper answer rather than anti-Linux point scoring and on this showing I don't think MS fanboys have much to crow about.

Here is a possible solution. I have had similar symptoms, and on a hunch, I applied the solution I had previously found for another updater problem [FONT=&quot] (KB942763). The solution was: uninstall Comodo Firewall Pro (exiting is not sufficient), restart Windows, do Windows update. Update was successful. If you like Comodo enough, may be you can reinstall the firewall, but I am a bit reluctant after the second such incident. I notified Comodo of the problem. May be more people should write.

Hi MZH, thanks for your input. I don't have Comodo so it can't be that. I use Kaspersky Security Suite so that might have slowed things down.
However, all 8 updates have now installed but my pc is not running as well as it was before.
Somebody (Matthew I think) suggested that this update pack was Service Pack 1 for Vista and that it took about 3 hours from start to finish so ,if that is the case, evrything is normal. However I was under the impression that SP1 was still Beta and only techy types were choosing to try it out to report bugs etc.
As you've probably guessed I'm far from techy and certainly didn't knowingly install Beta software.
I can't seem to find out if this is SP1 or not. If it is it has not improved my performance but rather made it very shaky indeed, with mouse, keyboard, shut down problems and so on. Plus it seems to be running slower than previously.
Anyway, thanks for your suggestion, john:confused:

The Comodo solution did it for me.

Hmm...somebody somewhere should be paying more attention to compatibility methinks. Oh well.

Hey, johnwillyums...

I just finished building a Vista X64 on the same MB as yours and was having the same exact issues...

It turns out it was a memory timing issue. I went into the BIOS and manually set my memory speed to 711 (from 800) and set my timings to my standard memory timings (4-4-4-12 for my sticks). Now - it all works smoothly and perfectly!

Hopefully, this will help you out...
