Hello eknirb,

Yes; you need it! Go ahead and let it install.
But whatever you do let it finish, unmolested. ;)
It may take close to an hour.

Hi eknirb,

Service Pack 1 for Vista includes over 3000 Security Updates and Bug Fixes, Its highly recommened you install the update. (Its less updates than XP )

My Computer

I installed SP1 and could no longer boot my pc, couldn't get to safe, restore, etc. Took me 2 wks to get it to restore...but (if I recall correctly...I fiddled endlessly trying to fix things) but only after I disabled legacy in BIOS.

My Computer

hmmmm.
thanks, that's all I need to know.
pass on SP1.

eknirb, You will not be able to get virus updates or security updates if you dont update sometime soon, you should try SP1 first before deciding not to install it.

Read others story's and results installing SP1 here: http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/140044-how-sp1-went-good-let-s-have-your-feedback.html

sharkattak, SP1 didn't cause your computer to fail. I guarantee you.

You will find that after you update with SP1, you cannot use your flash player anymore

feejeenson, Flash player does work with SP1.

Dmex, appreciate your feedback. However, this is a brand new HP pc. Vista has given me problems from the get-go. It failed immediately...immediately upon installation of SP1. Now that I finally have it restored to pre-SP1, I'm still having the same problems I've had since I bought the pc 3 months ago. Graphics get totally skewed. Stock day-trading programs virtually unusable. Bottoms of charts suddenly appear concurrently at the TOP of the screen. Text and charts get broken up and pieces of one part of the screen appear at another location on the screen. Lists and boxes become suddenly opaque or transparent; e.g. try to pull up start menu but the items are not on the menu. Just using the pc this am for 4 hours, I've had to boot...without exageration...about 15 times. I HATE vista. Hate it!

My Computer

oops my bad.:o
Yes you can still use flash player. what it took me a while to find out was that Visa 64bit has 2 versions of explorer available. why I don't know:cry:
If you access the web via the 64bit version of IE you flash player won't work.:mad:

Thats a hardware graphics issue, or bad graphic drivers, the first of which is a warranty issue and the second is a configuration issue. Both of which have nothing to do with Vista.

Personally I would try updating the graphics drivers, and if it persists I would ring up for a engineer to replace the gpu.

so what i'm reading in these forums is that microsoft has no knowledge of how to fix the vista sp1 install problems and no one else does also. i keep getting error code 800B0100 what a bunch of bull****. i jumped thru all the hoops on the help page and nothing works.

Hi Fuzzy,

You need to download the Standalone Installer here: http://www.vistax64.com/windows-updates/140470-why-sp1-may-not-available-you-how-get.html

sharkattak,

He is right about the graphics issue, Can you take a screenshot of GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility so we can get a better idea why your hardware is failing?

hmm I think you need to try the repair install as its obvious something has happened a long time before SP1 was released if you getting that type of error...
