I've just completed my first home built using Vista Ultimate 32bit. Initial updates including SP1 were all accomplished with no problems.

However, I have this 80072f8f error message now when I now try to get updates.

My computer's Date & Time are correct. I've also messed around with Internet Security settings, etc. as suggested by the online Help. But I still have the problem.

I'll keep working it; but any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
Found this for you. Hope it will help. Let me know, please.

Error Code 0x80072F8F when searching for available updates on Windows Update and Microsoft Update sites

Thanks for the reply. Appreciated.

I tried these two procedures:

Click to clear the "Check for server certificate revocation" option
1.
Start Internet Explorer.
2.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3.
Click the Advance tab.
4.
Browse down to the Security section.
5.
Click to clear Check for server certificate revocation, and then click OK.
6.
Restart the computer.

Advanced user steps: Register Softpub.dll, Wintrust.dll, Initpki.dll, and Mssip32.dl
1.
Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Softpub.dll, and then click OK.
2.
Repeat step 1 for the following files:
Wintrust.dll
Initpki.dll
Mssip32.dll

The first procedure was simple but did not resolve the problem - still could not update.

The second procedure ran nicely with regsvr32 Softpub.dll. However, when I ran regsvr32 Wintrust.dll I got another error window pop up:

"The module "Wintrust.dll" was loaded but the call to DIIRegisterServer failed with the error code 0x80070005."

Initpki.dll also failed; but Mssip32.dll ran okay.

As I said, I'll keep hunting. Thanks for the help.

Hello Snug,
dmex's is one of our moderators. His suggestion is usually right.
What you are doing is WAY beyond me. However I did find something that appears to be related. Also use the link to search around. You know what you're looking for.

You Receive a "DllRegisterServer" Error When You Try to Register a DLL by Using Regsvr32.exe

Also, I beleive that DMex was *asking* you to try to System Restore, not if you *had* performed a restore.

Actually, changing the time and date, and then synchronizing with the server was the first thing I did.

I will try the System Restore.

Steven...

I apologize for not getting back sooner. I'm in the midst of moving, and things are a little hectic.

I have installed the new beta client - live Messenger files. However, I think I need a new ID or password because it's not letting me in. It says something also about the Firewall but it's not the problem.

I'll get back to you.

Hi Glenn,

You dont need a new username or password to use this client, I have sent this to my friends without problems... If you check your "recieved files" folder for the msngr.log file and upload it I can try check to see whats going on...Get back to me when you can :p

My Computer

Steven,

I have downloaded the client. Thanks.

I have used Autopatcher. Worked fine.

I wanted to note that I have used Vista's "Event Viewer" under Administrative Tools to log what happens when I use the native Windows Update software. From my reading of the log, the software is successfully getting out to the server. But that's where things seem to end.

With regards to the similar problems I'm having with the Beta Messenger, here's the message that pops up.

"We were unable to sign you into Windows Live Messenger BETA at this time. Please try later.

Windows Live Messenger has made several failed attempts to sign you in. Your firewall may be blocking Windows Live Messengerfrom connecting to the service. Please review your firewall settings. See the retailer's instructions for more information."

Error code: 80048820
Extended error code: 80048412

I have disabled the firewall, and the same error message appears.

Steven ...

I apologize for the laborious nature of this issue. I did go into the Date and Time and there is an issue. It reads "Next synchronization: 6/10/2003 at 9:32 AM"

When I go into Internet Time and try to synchronize (all servers), it comes back with a message "An error occurred while Windows was synchronizing with time.windows.com."

The time in the bottom right of the screen seems correct along with the date. But I guess if it's not "synchronized" with the Internet, then I'm kaput on Updates.

[FONT=Tahoma,Helvetica,Sans-Serif]Click Start Web Messenger, and verify whether you can sign in. If you can sign in to Web Messenger, MSN Messenger may be blocked by a firewall. If the computer is running third-party (non-Microsoft) software or firewall software, such as ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security, or McAfee, make sure that the software is set to let MSN Messenger operate and has been updated to allow the new msn version (delete access entry and recreate)

My Computer

Steven:

Thanks for all your work. However, I think it's a clock problem. But unfortunately I can't get the Internet Time sync to work. I have 10 servers to work with, and I can't sync with any of them.

Intuitively, such simple problems (Windows Update & Internet Time sync) must have a simple answer. Perhaps it is a "certificate problem".

For example, I have the Windows Live Messenger (BETA) - thanks to you - which doesn't work at this point. However, when I start Windows Web Messenger it gives me "Certificate Error: Navigation Error". When I click on "Continue to this website (Not recommended)" it allows me to log in - and everything is fine.

So which end has the "certificate problem"? I suspect it's my end. But I have OEM valid Vista software. And I have downloaded SP1 through Windows Update - which then proceeded not to work.

So I think it's a SP1 problem. However, with your suggestion of getting the Autopatcher software, I can get updates to Vista. Hopefully SP2 will solve these small problems for me. Everything else seems to be working fine.

Thanks for your help. Glenn

My Computer

Hey Glenn,

Open Internet Explorer and goto Tools> Internet Options>Content tab> Clear SSL slate.

It might resolve the certificate issues, alternatively download Internet Explorer 8 RC1 and it might reinstall and solve the certificate store problems.

Thats a very serious issue running your computer without the certificate store and I can guarantee you it will cause you many, many more problems.

Let me know if you have any sucess.
