updates repeating

for the last week the defender updates i install keep reappearing after i install them until a new one is listed then that one keeps reappearing in the list that i have to install it again the last 3 defender updates i have installed each one about 6 times

anyone got any ideas how to fix this problem my othe pc is fine
seems like the file or log that update uses must be corrupt in some way

Have you used bitlocker or setup a partition for bitlocker?

yes i have encrypted all drives but that was a while ago

only thing i did is try adware 2008 maybe thats screwed up something

Hello,
Until you find a permanent fix, why not right click on the "repeating" update, then "hide" it.

yes thought of that then decided to keep installing once a day to see if it fixed itself

ok so it looks like its a windows defender problem as i cant get it to start just get error message 0x800106ba

tried quite a few of the supposed fixes on the net but still no go

thanks seen that one cant uninstall defender from vista

also emailed support but no reply

when i go to services and try to start windefend i get error2:the system cannot find the file specified

anyone know the file its looking for when started from services

i also whent throughthe reg all the files listed all but 2 worked

this one has to have a v added to the name for it to work wuwebv.dll

this one i cant find on my system initpki.dll

so i think most of the fixes seem to be for xp

try an SFC /SCANNOW from command prompt to see if any of your system files are corrupt - you'll need your Vista DVD....

weird and weirder. Did you perform step 3 from that link that dmex gave? Obviously forget about uninstalling Defender as it is tied into a knot with Vista....

Actually, that tried to uninstall the Signature files.msi not Defender itself.

i am check the registry and see if i can find where adware 2008 removed any reg entry's for defender when i run msconfig defenders not in the startup options

its going and updates no longer repeating
i exported all the windows defender keys i could find in the registry from another 64bit system and imported them into this one and defender now starts again

so i would say when i run adware 2008 i have removed reg keys for defender and didnt realize i did

thanks again to all that helped
very happy i dont have to start from scratch again


ps will encrypt my drives again now

apologies to addware 2008 it wasnt the cause of my problems it was mvregclean that removed the reg entries that stopped defender running
