Internet Problems After Allowing Updates

Hi,

I wonder if anyone could advise whether the following updates would affect my internet connection:???

Update for Windows Mail Junk E-mail Filter [June 2008] (KB905866)
Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.35.347.0)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2008 (KB890830)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB951376)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB950762)
Update for Windows Vista (KB947562)
Security Update for Windows Vista (KB951698)
Cumulative Update for Media Center for Windows Vista (KB950126)

I downloaded these yesterday and I have had problems with my wired modem and Netgear router today. I keep losing the internet connection. I've spoken to my ISP and Netgear. Netgear says that the modem keeps dropping the connection but my ISP says there are no problems at their end. It just seems odd that everything was working fine before I allowed these updates.

If anyone can advise, that would be great. Thanks for your time.

I too have had your problem mate. I noted that the following update stopped my system accessing the internet...

Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.35.347.0)

It also caused my web browsers to act strangely. As soon as I used system restore to go back before the update everything went back to normal again! After this, I stopped Vista automatically updating without my knowledge so that I could stop this update from installing. The only thing is, I have now noticed that the update above has since installed twice over ( according to my update history ) and I never told it too!! Also, I am now being told that THAT update is available for download!!?? What?
Well bizzare stuff at the moment.

Alienandy - sounds like the issue could lie with Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB915597 (Definition 1.35.347.0).

So far, my internet connection is stable but whenever I download updates, some problem or other always materialises. That's why I haven't downloaded the Vista SP because I just haven't got time to sort out all these gremlins. I spent several hours trying to resolve issues yesterday. Very frustrating!

Thanks Roy69 for the link. Alas, it wasn't working when I clicked but I'll try again later.

It's hard to believe that such a huge and important company would release updates that can affect your pc in such a bad way! Ridiculous really. Is this the 21st century or what? Sometimes think that technology is running backwards!!
Bring back the Amstrad CPC464 with good old tape deck. :D

I totally agree. What other company could get away with selling a product that was so riddled with problems and that constantly needed fixes. They really should master the art of completing a product to the highest possible standards before releasing it. That's my moan for the day. ;)

Yup - it is the 21st century - and it's hard to beleive that, after the existence of computers all around for 2+ decades, people associate one action with a symptom and automatically assume that the action and the symptom are related.

After all, it could be cause those definition updates seem toe be the problem because of a poorly written driver or application installed - and that would then fall not on M$ but on the developer who wrote that application or driver....

And *please* show me who *has* mastered that art of completing a product to the highest standard possible before releasing it...

I guess there are plenty of other factors that could contribute towards the kind of technical problems that we experience using MS Vista - I think that is fair to say. However, shouldn't a OS be developed and rigorously tested before release to anticipate these problems or is that an impossibility? I understand that the science is virtually evolving as we go along in that we become the `test' subjects whenever we switch to a new MS OS. What's more, we have to pay for that privilege. It's just frustrating that so much time is lost having to fix these problems at the user's end. And I'm not a computer scientist or even that technically minded. It's a struggle and stressful when these problems arise, hence my little rant. Life's too short. :(

I get as frustrated with computers as much as the next man, but I do have some sympathy with Microsoft.

After all, if you think of the infinite number of combinations of hardware and software in computers around the world, I think it's a miracle that Windows manages to work with the majority of them!

A fair comment. I just wish the problems that arise weren't so time consuming or stressful. Everything is now working ok at the moment, so I'm feeling more chilled out! :D
