Windows Update will not Restart

I think this is the correct place to put this problem, even though I don't know the exact cause I have a pretty good guess. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit and this problem has happened before where I install a Windows Update and when it restarts it causes a bunch of internal little problems.

It's like when a car battery dies and it shows all the little icons light up that need to be fixed when it's really just time for a new battery? Windows Update does this with internet connectablity, being able to open certain files, but the most important one is that it somehow stops itself from being able to restart/reboot at ALL.

It's been 10 days since I have 'successfully' installed a windows update and I can't tell you how many times I've had to manually reboot my system because it just freezes before restart.

How I fixed this the last time it happened was once my new updates were installed I was fine. This time, I left my computer on all night, and thankfully they downloaded, but when I went to click the "shuts down computer and installs updates" tab, it send me to the "Logging off" screen and froze. So then I tried logging off and installing the updates through there. All I get is a windows screen with no text. And just incase it was running, I left it on for 9 hours plus in hopes it would install updates and restart.

If anyone has any information about this... please help me, I'm on the edge of my mind with this operating system.

Oh and task manager does not work, it will load, but never appear, hidden somewhere I can't access it. And I have tried to run Windows Defender but it never scans. I've run avast! boot-time scans and regular scans and usually avast! catches whatever virus I have, so I don't think it's any kind of malware/trojan/spyware in my computer.

Thanks in advance...
