Windows update messed up programs

I'm using windows vista 32bit and have just installed quite a lot of updates from windows update which I've never done before. Once they had been installed I restarted the computer and now when I try to open anything such as IE, publisher, media player, msn etc it says The application failed to intialize properly.

Also I cant watch videos on youtube because it says I either have java script turned off, or I need the latest flash player which I already have.

Not sure how windows update could do this but would greatly appreciate any help.

Run Malwarebytes. It could be a Trojan Horse like Vundo causing Windows Updates to fail.

Navigate to c:\windows\system32\MSVBVM60.DLL, right click on the msvbvm60.dll and select security tab, click on edit>add type everyone and click ok. follow the screen shot to give read and execute permission. Click apply and OK.

Not Vista, but XP Pro. Bought new HP laptop, clean, booted and ran perfectly. First thing I did was MS update which was 37 patches. Reboot to blinking cursor. Nothing worked--not last known configuration, not safemode, not even repair mode. Entered bios, checked hard drive, memory, all good.

Called HP tech help and they said, "it happens on occasion." Formatted and reinstalled and all has been perfect since.

I've navigated to c:\windows\system32\MSVBVM60.DLL and I forgot to right click and edit, I just left clicked it and it asked me which program I wanted to open it with. I have no idea so I just selected microsoft word and it comes up with a load of text, not what is in the screen shot.

Now when I right click and click edit it just comes up with the word document with all the text.

Any ideas?

Not having much luck mate, I got the box up and went to security, mine looks abit different to the screen shot but its similar, at the top it has...

Group or user names:

SYSTEM
Administrators
Users
Trusted installer

"Everyone" is not there, neither is "Authenticated users".

I clicked edit on Users, and a window pops up, "Can't open access control editor.(null) "

And then another window pops up saying, "Consent UI for administrative applications has stopped working".
And underneath that it just has close or check online for a solution which does nothing.

Would it help if I got a screen shot so you can see? (not sure how to upload on to forums but can try)

I opened command prompt from, "accessories" and pasted the first one, hit enter and did the same for the second one.

However this was in command prompt not elevated command prompt and I don't know where to find that.

I didn't notice any difference, what was it supposed to do?

And paste the commands there

I searched cmd and it found cmd, not cmd.exe

So I right clicked on it anyway and " run as administrator" and a box appears, and it says,

"C:WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe
File system error (-1073741790).

And then another box appears "Consent UI for administrative applications has stopped working"

Well this is a bit of a beast isn't it

There may be some problem with your user account controll. Turn off user account control with the help of this link.

There may be some problem with your user account controll. Turn off user account control with the help of this link.

I used all three methods that were on the link and no luck:(

Method 1 = I go to control panel and click "Turn user account on or off" and the same box appears saying "Consent UI for administrative applications has stopped working" So I just click close.

Method 2 = I download the file to desktop. I go to desktop and right click on the icon and click merge. A box appears saying C:\Users\user\Desktop\Turn_UAC_Off.reg and then the other box appears saying the same thing as in method one.

Method 3 = I type in regedit and press enter, and then A box comes up saying C:\Windws\regedit.exe File system error (-1073741790). And the other box that appears in the previous two methods(and almost everything else) about the UI thing.

Any more ideas? Hehe

Hi Arthur,

Windows Update defiantly did not cause the problems you are having, The "File System Error" and "Consent UI has stopped working" plus the other errors you have said your receiving are telling me its either a imminent hard-disk failure or a Virus has hosed your entire system.

You system is in such state that it can not be repaired, you will need to completely reinstall a fresh copy of Windows. :(

If you have similar issues after reinstalling then your hard-disk might be about to fail.

Ohhhhhh wait a sec^^^
The computer was fine before I installed the windows updates, thats all I did and then restarted the computer like it says to after the update is complete. Restarted and barely anything works. All anti virus stuff etc is up to date.

I can't see anything that could have caused it apart from the update, was fine but as soon as it was done the whole comps messed up.

Whats an imminent hard-disk failure? And what could have caused it?

Am pretty :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad: at the moment as the comps pretty new.

THis is caused due to the lack of permission on the dlls located in system32 folder for your user account.

Restart your computer and press f8, then select safe mode with command prombt, Type
CACLS %systemroot%\System32\*.dll /E /G BUILTIN\Users:R, hit enter
CACLS %systemroot%\System32\*.ocx /E /G BUILTIN\Users:R, hit enter
in the command prompt.

Let me know the result.

If the above failed to work, login with another user account which is having administrative privellage, and excecute these commands..

If I am running a 64 bit system should the dll be in the syswow64 dir or folder?

Specifically little things like the microsoft games, hearts solitaire etc. When they are executed just an indication of the spin, and then nothing else happens.

Permissions? Teh event log did have a wmi error, I applied the fix from Microsft. It was a select from.... couldn't write to the path.

I was able to resolve this issue by changing the Shortcut's starting directory.
After searching for cmd, right-clicking on the Command Prompt shortcut that appeared, and navigate to the file's location.

For me this was:
%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools

Right-click the Command Prompt shortcut and change the "Start in:" folder to:
C:\Windows\System32
