Hi everyone, I am currently running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit, and recently I haven't been able to install any of my windows updates. I think the problem started after I installed SP1. I keep getting the error message "Windows cannot check for updates" along with the error code 800736b2. I've been to Microsoft for a possible solution, they're no help, and I've searched all over the internet for an answer only to be greeted with the same result. I'm at whits end here. At this point I'm willing to try anything.

I've tried: Resetting the windows update component (not sure if it was done right though), scanned for viruses (with AVG, and Panda non present), as well we disabling my cookies and firewalls etc. Nothing seems to work, and I can't find any information on this error. All answers are welcomed :) Could it be a registry error?

Thanks so much guys! Also, Ive been hearing I'm not the only one with this problem?

800736B2 ERROR_SXS_INVALID_ACTCTXDATA_FORMAT
The application binding data format is invalid.

You could try running the Update Readiness Tool to see if that
resolves the error:
Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows Server 2008 R2 Release Candidate, and for Windows 7 Release Candidate

If no joy, suggest running the System File Checker:
How to repair the operating system and how to restore the operating system configuration to an earlier point in time in Windows Vista

Other then that, MS offers no charge for installation and
compatibility issues associated with Security updates:
MS08-069: Description of the security update for XML Core Services 6.0: November 11, 2008

Thanks for your timely response!
I tried the first to steps with no luck unfortunately. :( I'm currently trying the final step that you provided. I've also emailed Microsoft again, about the issue. Fingers crossed, if I can find a fix for this issue, hopefully that will mean some relief for others!

Thanks again, and I'll let you know the results. :)

*edit* Final step didn't work either. I guess the only thing left to do is to keep searching. Still waiting to hear from Microsoft though.
