Can't access internet after Vista SP2 upgrade

Last night my system updated with Service Pack 2. This morning when I booted up I received a "Found new hardware" window with a message stating that:

Windows needs to install driver software for your unknown device

I didn't install any new hardware nor do I know what device this is referring to.

The big issue is that I can not access the internet, even if I connect directly to my router with a cord. My network connectivity status displays as Connected with limited access with a secondary massage of The dependency service or group failed to start.

If I try to establish a network connection, I get the following error message:

Component GUID: {A bunch of letters and numbers}
Component file: [C:windows\system32\connect.dll]
Error: (0x800706BA) <The error message could not be found>

Additional info: Failed to detect internet connectivity

I appreciate any help or suggestions that help me resolve this issue.

one of these may help:
1a-check DEVICE MANAGER to see if there is a problem with your network adapter.
1b-roll back the driver for the network adapter.
2-delete the network adapter, restart the computer, and let windows reinstall it.
3-check the windows update installation log for device driver updates and uninstall them.
4-check your network settings and make sure you are set to automatically connect (every time i update my network adapter, it disables my network).
5-uninstall sp2. (last resort)

(you could also try calling microsoft. i believe tech support for service pack 2 is still free at this time)

Thanks, I'll give these a try and let you know if they work. Do you happen to have the number for Microsoft. When I tried to find it, I got lost a hall of mirrors and was lucky to find my way out. :)

OK, so I checked my network adapters, I have two listed ...

Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller and
Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

When I checked them the status reads The device is working properly for each one. The Roll Back feature was not available to me, it was grayed out. By delete, I assume you mean uninstall, but I did not do that. I'm willing to try that but I thought some additional information might be helpful first.

Directly below the Network Adapters on the Device Manger I have listed:

Other devices
Unknown device

I'm not sure if that matters.

Also, I tried to reset TCP/IP protocol as described in the link provided by Flavius and when it typed in netsh int reset c:\resetlog.txt at the c prompt, I get

Requesting, Echo Request, Failed
The requested operation requires elevation
Requesting Global, Failed
The requested operation requires elevation
Requesting Interface, Failed
The requested operation requires elevation
There's no user specified settings to be reset

What I did succeed in doing is restoring my system via the rstrui command back to last night's settings, but I still received a "Found new hardware" window with a message stating that Windows needs to install driver software for your unknown device when I restart. And still no internet.

The requested operation requires elevation
You didn't elevate command prompt to do that, thus you had error, besides why did you do manaully although there exist "MS Fix it" program which do this automatically? I don't understand.Just double click on "MS Fix it" image, download program and run it!

Because I can't access the link from the computer that is having the problem. I am on-line via another computer.

OK, I think I've at least narrowed down one issue. My Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller is not working properly. Windows cannot load the drivers required for the device (code 31). I tried installing the driver from my disc but it appears that the disc is bad so I tried downloading from the Dell site but I still have a problem.

Navigate to key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} ,if you find in this key strings UpperFilters or LowerFilters then remove these strings +restart

My Computer

So after spending a day chatting with a Microsoft rep and a second day on the phone with another Microsoft rep, I got it all fixed ... but it took a complete reinstall to get it working.

Thanks for all your help.
