I have Windows vista Home basic OS. Yesterday I wanted to restart my computer, but I notice the "update pop up" at the bottom of the screen, so I started the updating. There were three updates "configuring", after it finished it restarted, but the restart was interupted by "Startup Repair". After "Startup Repair" finished it restarted, and then "went right back to the updates screen" stating Configuring updates: Stage 1 of 3- 0% complete Do not turn off your computer. At the "Click here for diagnostic and repair details" it said,

System Disk=\DeviceHarddisk0
Windows directory=C:\Windows
AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 1

It also said.

Root cause found:
..............................
Boot critical file c:\ntoskrnl.exe is corrupt.

What could be the problem?

See if you can boot to safe mode. If so, use system restore from before the updates.
