after unknown update vista fails to start and recover

After installation of unknown update (I have it set as automatic so I'm not sure what was that) in my notebook I restart it
(it can be that I also catched a virus or something but since it happend around time when automatic updates done I assume it it the problem).
But now it is notopening. Vista is automatically trying to fix the problem but every time failed. It’s showing the following error details

Right now I can only access my note book in command mode
So fas it looks like I have two options: format the disk or go back to fabric settings, and since I have a lot of data I don't want to do that.
Is there a way to restore the data?

What I can do? Please help me to solve this problem.
and sorry for my English, it is not my native language.
Thank you,
Aleksandra

Hi and welcome to the forums .

You can do a clean install onto your PC without formatting the disk, it just moves all the files previously on the disk to Windows.old in the root directory, you will not lose any data but you will need to reinstall all your programs and settings.

If at any point during the installation it says do you want to reformat your drive just say no.

You could alway do a system restore from your Vista install disk which may solve the problem, there is a tutorial on how to do this at http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/194765-system-recovery-options.html, I would recommend you do this before anything else.

thanks for you answer
so far I managed to copy all my data to the external drive what is very good
on the other hand when testing the hard drive under bios gave me the results that is corrupted
now I'm trying to restore to the orginal system with system recovery, test the hard drive again and when it will give me again the result: broken, I'm going to buy a new drive

that's all what I can do, I think

If you've backed up all of your data, doing a complete format might fix the corruption problem.

If however it doesn't (which sounds unlikely to me) and it turns out to be a hard drive failure then yes, you will need to buy a new hard disk; remember it might be covered by the warranty.
