cant get windows module installer to stay on automatic for sp1 update

upgraded from xp to vista home premium 32bit as a pre-requisite to windows 7, but i cant get the vista sp1 to install. Windows module installer wont stay on automatic mode as I have read could be my issue for sp1 upgarde failure.
just need sp1 update so I can upgade to windows 7.
