Updates Fail but why?

Hi there guys

I am new to the site and new to Vista and just wanted some help and advice please with a problem im having with downloading updates for a laptop that i have just got.

I bought a 2nd hand laptop that has Vista on it and i dont think its been updated for a while as when i turned it on and did a check for updates that was about 150 updates to do.

so i started doing them and a lot of them installed but there is also a few that wont install for some reason as i keep getting back that they had Failed.

so what would be the reason for them to Fail to install?

I have service pack 1 which i want to install service pack 2 but even when i tried to install that it would not do it as came back saying there was some things missing so could not install.

Any ideas guys please.

Do you get an error code when it fails? Have you checked event viewer? Which ones are failing?

Yes i get the error codes but there are a few of them and they are Mostly Language packs and some vista updates.

could this be the reason on why i cant install Service pack 2?

Each service pac requires that you have certain updates before installing the SP. That is probably why you cannot install SP2

is there anyway of finding out what the missing updates are that i need to download because there are updates that are showing to download but they fail each time i try to download them.

To the best of my knowlege you only get the updates that are needed to install the SP1 after its installed, you get those for SP2

You can try the manual download for SP2. That's what I do and I've never had a problem with it. It has all the updates released between SP1 & SP2 however you must have SP1 installed first.

Except for a few that were issued just before SP2
Upadates issued just a short time before SP2 are not included due to timing problems. This is true with all SPs
