Hi I'm new to the forum and I am just wondering if I might be able to get any help.

I have a Dell XPS-630I running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit

I have recently found an issue with my computer with installing windows updates that I cant fix.

I have tried running the sfc command which I have a copy of the report it has sent me attached to the post hopefully.

I also tried to install and run the System readiness update tool but I am unable to run it or any powershell applications (another error for another time).

also I apologize if I didn't post any information about my problem that could help please just tell me and I will do so.

but if anyone is willing to help I would really appreciate it,

Thanks in advance!:)

Hello digdug304 and welcome to the forums

I hope Rich doesn't mind me hijacking his thread, so to speak, but, with the help of a good friend, I have been learning all about Windows Update.

I would like you to post the contents of your Windows Update log please. You can find this file here:

Hello digdug,

To fix this problem, we will need to edit your registry. I need to know if you feel comfortable about doing this? If not, it isn't a problem and I can write you a script to do it all, but it would be easiest if you did it manually. All it will involve, is deleting a value, but it is essential that you have basic registry knowledge - such as the difference between a key and a value.

Before we continue, I would like you to backup your registry:

Backing Up Your Registry

  1. The steps that I am about to suggest involve modifying the registry. Modifying the registry can be dangerous so we will make a backup of the registry first.
Modification of the registry can be EXTREMELY dangerous if you do not know exactly what you are doing so follow the steps that are listed below EXACTLY. if you cannot perform some of these steps or if you have ANY questions please ask BEFORE proceeding.
  2. Download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)
  3. Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)
  4. Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)
  5. Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable).
  6. Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are ticked
  7. Press OK
  8. Press YES to create the folder.

Alright I don't mind trying to modify the registry I have done it once before but was walked thru it step by step so I'm willing to try if you're willing to say what i should do.

Also forgot to mention but I did what you posted before with making a backup of the registry with ERUNT so ready whenever you are able.

Great :) If you are ever unsure about something, do not proceed! No matter how small the question, just ask me.

Firstly, let's clear up the difference between a key and a value:

Regedit.png

Now we've got that out of the way, I would like you to open up regedit. You can do so by typing regedit in the search box in your start menu and clicking on the result.

I would like you to navigate to the following key (in the folder tree in the left panel):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\ComponentDetect\Microsoft-Windows-Foundation-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~0.0.0.0

Then delete this value by right clicking on it and pressing Delete:

Package_4_for_KB951618~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.1

warning   Warning
Do not, in any circumstances, delete the key. Only delete the value

Using the same methods as before, I would like you to navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-Foundation-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~0.0.0.0

And delete this value in the same fashion as before:

Package_for_KB946084~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.0

Then navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\PackageDetect\Microsoft-Windows-ServerCore-Package~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~0.0.0.0

And delete this value:

Package_for_KB946084~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.0

It is essential that you get the right name for each of the keys and values! It has to be exactly what I told you, skip to the next one if it isn't there, and let me know.

Hi Digdug,

Okay, just cancel it and let's try something else. Can you copy and paste the contents of the CheckSUR log again please:

C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Hopefully it will have generated a more recent log :)

Hey Tom,

Just to say soon after I said the installer was hanging it completed and i have attached the new CheckSUR log like you have asked.

And the Microsoft Fix it programs do not work for me because I am for whatever reason not able to install Powershell. I have tried to install it manually but always get the error saying "this update doesnt apply to your system" or something to that effect.

I attached a picture of that as well.

Just to say thanks for all the help and fast replies seriously!

That's a good start. We've lost two of the errors :) We're down from 6 issues to 4. Just so I don't have to search for your attachment again, here are the remaining offenders:

Hi Digdug,

Sorry that I keep double posting, I keep thinking of new things to add and I don't want to edit my previous post as I'm not sure if you'll see them.

You're most welcome for the help, these Windows Update threads are good experience for me as it's something which I'm not very well versed with. Don't worry though, I know enough to prevent myself from suggesting dangerous things.

Can you make a MGADiag report for us please? The tool can be found here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Download it, launch it, then press continue. When it finishes, press Copy. Then paste this into your next post for us please :)

All this does is tells me a little information about your Windows activation (don't worry, no sensitive information is in this log). Sometimes Windows Update can throw a wobbly if there's a problem with the activation. I'm not implying that you're using an illegal copy of Windows or anything! I just want to make sure that Windows is detecting your license, assuming you have one.

We'll sort out your powershell problem after these updates.

Tom

Don't worry I don't take any offense to anything and again no rush to fix it i've had the problem for about a year now and you've only seen it for a few days no way it'll just magically be fixed

But as you asked i have run the tool provided and posted the information in a .txt file i put it into the post before but edited it into the file it was far too much on one page
