updates

have just performed re-install of os.
then downloaded and installed all updates
then system required restart clicked on restart now went out of the room popped back it had completed 100% of 2 out 0f 3 updates but then when i returned to the computer the picture has gone from the screen but computer is still turned on?

no leads have been removed etc have checked them all to see if loose etc dosent sound like there is any hard drive activity but system powered on light is still lit

not sure if this helps with diagnosis but i just used my laptop to check if my unresponsive desktop is on the network map but its not appearing on the network map?

is it possible to just switch the machine off while its like this? or would that not be a good idea?

also when i plug a flash drive (with activity light) into usb port

the activity light turns on to indicate power to the usb stick but does not flash to indicate reading or writing etc (usually when i plug it in it flash now and again even if im not writing or reading files to/from it) but its not doing that?

it has been that way for (frozen) for an hour or more now surely thats not right is it?

When you install updates you should do a few at a time or you may very well get freezes. You are forced to shut it down now and yes, you may damage the hard drive. There is no choice. Shut down by holding the power button until shutdown. Try to wait until no hard drive activity.

ok thanks will the updates that may or may not of finished installing be ok or will they need to be re-done? is there any way to tel if they were succsefull or re do if unsucsessfull

Once you shut down all that were not installed properly will be resent. You biggeste problem is slight hard drive damage. After shut down do a chkdsk.

i have done that. when i turned back on it started configuring from where i last saw it when i left it it was 100% of 2 of 3 updates when i turned off on again it started at configuring 3 0f 3.. 0,0% complete

how do i do chkdsk?

You cant do chkdsk until the updates are ended.

Make sure that both boxes are checked as shown. Any corrupted clusters will be repaired. There is a limit on the amount of times that clusters can be repaired. It will take several hours
