I am running windows vista basic service pack 2, 32 bit and keep getting the following message:

Windows Update Cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.

I have tried this to no avail.
I have also tried to restore to a point i know things were working and this has not worked.
The other things i have also tried is i have run PC Utilities and a full scan with kaspersky

Does anyone else have any other suggestions please

Hi Madhur B

Thank you very much for your post. I have now tried deleting the Qmrg files as your link suggested and gone through the other suggestion with blackviper but unfortunately this has still not solved the issue

Hi Ezard1983,

After performing the steps mentioned above did you try to restart the Windows automatic services? If not, try to restart the service, check how it works. Please follow the steps mentioned in the below link to manually restart the Windows Update service: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/59910-services.html

Please post the results.

Is the Windows Update service actually running, according to services.msc?

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.

Hi Noel

Yes sorry i forgot to add that to the list of things i have already tried.
I have been told by a workmate that is looks like i will have to reinstall microsoft or update to a newer version

Im still hoping i can find a solution without having to do that

No did get rid of any registry as knew that would not be a good idea. Everything but the Microsoft update is working fine.
I have been told that if the computer is working fine and i have full protection that i dont have to worry about updating windows vista does anyone know if this is the case

Don't believe everything you hear.
Windows NEEDS updates.
Windows almost certainly does NOT need reinstalling - and certainly doesn't need upgrading (i.e. spending money)

As richc46 says, please run SFC - but I'd run CHKDSK first....

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

If you reinstall your OS, it will solve all your problems, UNLESS, it is a hardware isssue, which I truly doubt.

Please stick with the program :)
Having said that, it's an interesting report.
Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt window, and post the results.

NET START BITS
SC QUERYEX BITS
NET START WINDEFEND
SC QUERYEX WINDEFEND
NET START SHAREDACCESS
SC QUERYEX SHAREDACCESS
NET START BFE
SC QUERYEX BFE

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
