when doing a windows update I get the following error code 80070673. did a search on google and got all these sites that recommend downloading some type of software that will scan pc and when you try to fix the problem they want you to pay a fee and to register. is there anyone that has had this issue and found a solution that works without having to trust some site that claims to have the fix? thanks in advance for any and all help.

I would do this
Go to start search box and type

cmd

Right click and select run as administrator

In the box that opens type

net stop wuauserv

press enter

type

ren c:\windows\softwaredistribution sd.old

press enter

type

net start wuauserv

press enter

restart computer

What this does
Windows updates are kept in a folder called Software Distribution
This series of commands stops Windows update service
Renames the software distribution folder to softwaredistribution.old
restarts the Windows update service

When you restart the computer the software distribution folder is recreated.
Windows will look again for updates

Try installing a few updates at a time until you figure out which one is causing the issue.

townsby......the updates are Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB959509)X86 and Security Update for Microsoft C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistribution. I have my pc set for automatic updates. These 2 came up as important updates. What concerns me is that the Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB959509)X86 has the "X86" on the end. Also I have Service Pack 2 installed on my machine.

I realized I had a problem when I noticed the Windows installer screen started popping up and I couldn't get rid of it . That's when I found the error codes.

I haven't tried installing the updates without the antivirus. Will try that next.

Again any and all help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

question about the above link. Is there any other program/software that must be downloaded before this tool can be used? I have tried it on two different pc's. When I click on the link I get the .NET Framework Setup Cleanup Utility box that opens, but it doesn't allow me to click on any of the buttons at the bottom of the box....View Readme ...View Log... Cleanup Now... Exit. Thought maybe I need to have something else loaded.

Ok I found 2 version of .NET Framework. .Net Frame work 4.5.2 and 3.5 sp1. Got both of them deleted from programs. Tried the updates again got the error codes again and the updates didn't load.

My Computer

Any particular reason why you need them installed? Windows doesn't require .net to run.

I don't know why I need them. My pc was set to auto update. One night I guess it tried to update those two updates and that's when I noticed they failed and I had the error code. Also a little window keeps popping up saying to insert disc for windows installer. This all started happening around the same time. So of course I thought there was an issue. That's how all of this got started. What are those updates for any way?

Thanks
