Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - April 2017 (KB890830)

Update History indicates this has been installed automatically 19 times since May 9th until today, May 27th. And it's still prompting that the same update is available. Is there any way to get the system to recognize that it's already installed?

Vista Home Premium, SP2, 32 bit system.

You could try resetting the Windows Updates

Click on Start.

Type CMD in search box.

Right click on CMD and select Run as administrator.

Stop the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. To do this, type the following commands at a command prompt. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

net stop wuauserv

net stop cryptSvc

net stop bits

net stop msiserver

Now rename the SoftwareDistribution and Catroot2 folder. You can do this by typing the following commands in the Command Prompt. Press the “ENTER” key after you type each command.

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old

Now, let’s restart the BITS, Cryptographic, MSI Installer and the Windows Update Services. Type the following commands in the Command Prompt for this. Press the ENTER key after you type each command.

net start wuauserv

net start cryptSvc

net start bits

net start msiserver

Type Exit in the Command Prompt to close it.

Hi Softshell:

These repeated MSRT offerings are a common problem for Vista SP2 users - see the last section of my post # 430 in the bleepingcomputer thread Windows Vista Update Hangs at "Checking For Updates". There is a link in that post to Gunter Born's 13-Apr-2017 tech blog entry Issues with Update KB890830 (Windows Malicious Removal Tool) that might have a possible solution.

Vistaar's June 2016 thread May's Malicious Software Removal Tool returns to haunt me June 13 might also have some useful feedback from other Vista SP2 users affected by this problem.
