Re: WM so slow to open a reply window it is unusable

This is totally rediculous

PEOPLE WHO USE EMAIL ARE PENALIZED BECAUSE THEY HAVE A LARGE NUMBER OF CONTACTS.

This is not FRIGGING SOLUTION - it is inconveniencing yoruself so you can support useless crap provided by microsoft.

Where is the fix MICROSOFT has provided to make it useable for anyoen with a contact list???

If microsoft has known about this since vista was released - i am taking the whole machine back to buy a mac

How to Fix the To Many Contacts Issue :
CREDIT TO: Eddie Miller at this link: NetOrator.com
NOTE: This is more of a workaround than a fix, but it works.
1. Simply go the Contacts folder and reduce how many you have. You can either delete or relocate these contacts to a different or new personal folder.
NOTE: Contacts folder is located here: C:\Users\(your username)\Contacts
2. You can then just simply browse to this new location when you click the Contacts or To: button in Windows Mail to select your other contacts.

Hi Gusmctavish,

Welcome to the forum.

I agree it is not a fix, but it is the only solution for now. If you would like a more robust email program, there is Outlook or the free Windows Live Mail Beta 2 (WLM). I use WLM without any problems. You might give it a try and see. Maybe when the SP1 is released in the rumored Q1 of 2008, this issue will be addressed.

WLM supports Pop3, IMAP, HTTP website (EX: Hotmail) email, and is a lot more stable. Plus, WLM will minimize to a tray bar icon and has a separate Inbox for each account. WLM will automatically import Windows Mail messages, accounts, and settings into it. Contacts will have to be manually imported from within WLM. (Tools, Contacts, File, Import, Address book for current Windows User.) To see the Menu bar, press ALT+M and check "Show all menus".

For US and UK (32 bit Vista):

For US and UK (64 bit Vista):
Windows Live Beta 2 Suite Downloads
For non-US and non-UK locations (direct download):

Shawn

So i downloaded the live mail beta

it has some funny features like a list of all of my email accounts - just like Microsoft to decide to organize my inbox with exactly the opposite concept from what MIGHT BE useful to most - instead of storing inbox stuff the in the groups that most of us might create such as individual email address and names we are familiar with - it is NOW set up to create a grouping for each of my 50 email addresses.

It simply takes up valuable space ON TOP of the mailboxes I SET UP MYSELF to organize our mail.

This is not an improvement but IT IS WORSE.

I then downloaded the firefox email program THUNDERBIRD and it will not generically import the mail i have in windows mail YET. So i thank god i have had all my mail backed up on Gmail.com SO i quickly imported it with their gmail connector. Good thing google supports the common man FOR FREE.

Now i have a fast efficeint email program that WORKS.

The contact list in windows Vists is now stored in individual XML TEXT files. Each is a huge file relative to what is needed and each has to be searched to see if the email address i am replying to exists in order to know to add or update the existing record. My contact list is 1900 records and growing each day. Why or is it better to say WHO decided to store the contact records in the MOST antiquated database structure possible. That idiot must be unemployed or was before he was hired by MMicrosoft. lol.

The development of databases came about when storing data in text files became an unacceptably and far too cumbersome a manner to manage data.

So now we have the largest software provider on earth going back to day one to learn the same frigging lesson. How stupid is that.

HP will have to find a new customer this machine is going back to the store - then i guess i visit Apple for a system that works without punishing its customer.

Re: WM so slow to open a reply window it is unusable

I have used these tips in XP many times, and once in Vista.
They absolutely helped a lot with slow Winbdows Mail

change display settings from 32 bit to 16 bit
(why MS thinks 32 bit should be the default astounds me)

turn off outbound email virus scanning, left inbound active

(this is the one that helps the most)

System Properties/advanced/performance

change performance radio button to
"adjust for best performance"

wait till Windows downgrades all your settings
use windows for a few minutes

go back to System Properties/Advanced/Performance and set it back to
"Let Windows pick whats best for my computer"

that last tip has improved performance on many an XP machine, an did wonders for the Windows Mail on the first and only computer Ive used with Vista/Windows Mail

good luck all

Re: WM so slow to open a reply window it is unusable

If it isn't already too late, I had the same thing and I hated Windows Mail, did the WLM aswell. But after a fresh install, I went to the windows update site and downloaded all the updates, and it has worked perfectly since. Not sure if this will help you, but it did for me.
