This seems like more of a router issue, but I'll take a shot here.

The DSL comes in, connects to the modem. Modem connects to router. Router goes to both PCs.

-------
the question:

I come into the living room in the morning, turn on the HP PC, it boots up, all programs load......and the little network icon says NO CONNECTION.
This happens maybe 3 times out of 10 startups in the morning. (The HP is started at 6a and is left on til 10p at night, then shut down.)

So I pull out the power on the router, wait a few seconds, pop it back in....and I have the connection for my PC. Works everytime.

The other PC, the Dell, used to be mine..and does not have this happen.

How can I fix this problem?

I moved this to networking, because I think you'll have better luck there.

You may want to check your router settings. There could be an issue with IP addresses getting crossed.

WHat should router be set as? And thanks for moving it.

It's really hard for me to know. It is greatly dependent on your ISP and your home network. If you take a look at the settings and the things that your ISP gave you, that's a start.

You'll also need to determine how you want the connections with the computers. Will the computers be given set IPs by the router, or will they be given as they sign on? Password protected? etc.

Is this a wireless or wired network? Also, can you tell me what router it is?

My Computer

well, it's a Linksys, wired network. BEFSR-41 vers 2.

Mwave.com - LINKSYS BEFSR41 etherfast cable/dsl router w/4-port switch (retail) (*regular $50 - $5 mwave instant discount = $45, while supplies last!)

Sorry to say I don't know much about routers. I didn't set any IP address- I just plugged this PC into the existing DSL and it worked. No password protection.

Someone told me I should change this setting to make sure it said 100mbps
full duplex..seemed to intially help- when I would boot up it SLAMMED into showing the network icon, connecting. But now every few days or so, I have to pull the plug and replug the router.

I'm not really a networking expert, so I'm kinda going along with you here.

In your browser type this address: 192.168.1.1

That will get you to the actual router and should let you see the page that allows you to modify the router settings. I'm not actually too familiar with Linksys stuff, but there may be a couple things in there.

In some ways, I think you may have hit upon what is called a "race condition". In this case, certain things have to happen in a certain order, but there isn't anything telling one to wait for another. I'll look around and see if I can find anything more definite, but I'm starting doubt it has as much to do with restarting the router and more to do with the computer settings (though I don't know what).

The best way I can think to check that is to try to reconnect (or repair, if that's an option) after it fails to start up. You can right click on the two little network computers (they'll probably have a little red x over them) in the lower right hand corner and select "connect to network". If it's available, select "repair network connection".

One other thing I'd like you to try, if possible. Start-up your computer without the network cable plugged in. Then, once you're started, plug it in. See if you get a connection that way.

Thanks.

tried this;

In your browser type this address: 192.168.1.1

it asked me for a password....which I don't know?

It's blank if you didn't set one when you set up your router. Just hit enter or click okay or whatever with nothing in that spot. (I guess that could come off as a bit snippy. Not my intent. I just don't know what your firmware will look like).

Good luck.

My Computer

It's not blank....

Try leaving the username blank and use "admin" as the password. If that doesn't work, Some newer Linksys stuff uses "admin" as the username and password. If neither method works, the default password has been changed.

OK, I got in....admin worked. what do i look for? Internet connection says PPPOE.
is that wrong? or should it be 'obtain IP automatically.' or 'static IP.'

I would leave the router alone. I doubt it is the problem. PPPoE is what your DSL provider requires you to use to connect to them via the router.

I suppose your systems are using DHCP to obtain an IP address, default router, DNS, etc. Make sure that the LinkSys has enough DHCP address space allocated for all the devices on your network that use DHCP. I bet that it does.

Your system might be having a problem with DHCP. To test this, what I would do is configure your system IP setup manually. To do this, you will need to find out the name server addresses from your DSL provider. They should have given that information to you when they setup your service. Once you have that info, type "ncpa.cpl" into the Start menu "Search" field and hit return. This will show your network connections. Right click on the network connection that is connected to your DSL router and get "Properties" on it. Select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click on "Properties". My guess is the "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected. Change it to "Use the following IP address:". For the IP address enter something outside of the DHCP range. Something like "192.168.1.55" should be fine. Set the Subnet mask to "255.255.255.0" and the "Default gateway:" to "192.168.1.1". Then enter the IP addresses for the two name servers you got from your provider. If you get more than two, just enter the first two. Hit okay and close up all the windows.

If you are able to get to the Internet with this setup, test it for a while and let us know what happens.

OK, I can get in with 'admin'- now what? It also seems to be stuck on 'Identifying; Acess Local & Internet.' A new development, but I am (obviously) still connected.

Try This
<1> Restart you're Router there is a Re set button On The Back of The Modem
push it hld it till all you're Light's go out once there let you'r e modem Lights all come back if you're intenet button doesn't come back on open you're web browser back up type In
192.168.1.1
this should open the setting's to you'r e Modem

<2>

to set up you're modem gives you the Set up Options.

type in you're e-maill address when it asks you you're name then you're password in the feild where it ask for password. click next

you're region canada and usa is 0.35

click next this will do the main settings you're Internet Green light should come back on there might be a couple of more settings if not click next or ok and try and surf after.

then go in and set it to 100 like you showed in you're Diogram pic you pasted here,

you're modem might have Security settings you're Internet compony might be aible to help you set thease up if Not you're help Instructional manual exsplaines all this its a good time to learn all this and right things down to keep notes this make it easyer if a problem crops up saves you time to call ther Internet compony up cause they won't alway's give you the right devices if it's not there router they use the excuse we don't know how to set it up hey I been there on that and go a Speed Touch 780 router and I like the speed touch cause it shows you everything step by step on the left hand site and what I have just explained here are in most router set ups.

its better to thease thng's the more you get to you're Modems routers computers settingmail functions then it's easyer better to tell you the truth to get the right setting's then have some ele try and give the wrong advice telling you to leave it alone I under stand some what he'orshe was trying to say But thats not always the case the router can get congested and needs a restart just lik you're car needs Gas to doesn't hurt to try to clear some if the memory uselly 99% outta 100% is the problem.

PPPoe The 'obtain IP automatically the PPPoe is most inter net componys setting's unless they have you set at a Static IP address which more money but basic Internet Is PPPOe

Have you tried setting the ip address of each computer to their own individual address.
I had a similar prob on XP (I know not the same OS) but I had two computers connected to a Netgear wireless router and they often failed to connect set the ip's on each something like ***.***.0.1 and ***.***.0.2 and that worked.
