I have been trying to get task scheduler to send emails (on demand until I get it working) However it just wont send for some reason. I don't get an error message but I don't get an email either. Is there something wrong with this?

Hello Fmjc001,

Is the computer running when you have the Task scheduled to send the email?

If not, then this will show you how to have it wake the computer up.

Do you have the Trigger setup to cause the email to be sent?

You may need to have the task set with Run with highest privileges.

This is for Event Viewer, but it may help with what you are wanting to do also. Just substitute your task instead.

Hope this helps some,

No, Although i have tried about 5 or 6 and I am still not getting any emails from myself.

Can you suggest a smtp server that will work?

You are unlikely to find a free smtp server that is reliable as it would just be hammered by spammers :(

Your best bet would probably be to install a local smtp server such as Free SMTP Server

No way you can send an email this way with the task scheduler.

1/ free.fr won't let you use their smtp server without authentication and they closed the port 25, they use 587 i think.
2/ the credentials used for the SMTP authentication need to be the same credentials used to run the task, which means that the security credentials used for running the task must also have privileges on the SMTP server to send e-mail.
If the SMTP server is a non-Windows based server, then the e-mail will be sent if the server allows anonymous access which means never :)

A script could be used, unfortunately i don't have time these days to write one but i guess you eventually could find a few on the net.

I personally use my email client's scheduler to send reports on tasks and sometimes the task scheduler through my own smtp server.

I downloaded Free SMTP Server, How do i use it? Its not working still. On the SMTP server thing it says active connections but there is nothing there?

Edit: Ok, I got it to appear on active connections but still no emails?

I know this is a pretty old post, but I may have found a solution. As far as I can tell, it seems most authenticated SMTP servers have a certain format for their name. For instance, I'll use my school's SMTP server as an example:

auth.smtp.vt.edu

I was able to get Task Scheduler to send an e-mail message by removing the auth part, so the e-mail was sent to:

smtp.vt.edu

It sent successfully, though it took a little longer than when it was intended.

best of luck,
Dave

Hello PainlessTorture:
I'm having the same trouble, but it's aggravated by the fact that the FreeSMTP software help menu is incompatible with my Windows 7. Can you offer any details on how you got 'send email' to work.

My Computer

I've made a little progress, but still not able to send email. I have downloaded and installed the Free SMTP Server from:
Free SMTP Server
I learned that you must then use 'localhost' in the entry for SMTP server within Task Scheduler. The email is now being picked up by the Free SMTP server, but the Task Scheduler reports an error code 0x 80040213. Near as I can tell this means: 'The transport failed to connect to the server'. I'm thinking that Windows 7 needs to be configured in some way to eliminate this problem. Any suggestions appreciated.
Pete
