Intrusive adverts

Websken

For the past two days I have been experiencing problems when viewing internet sites. E.G. As soon as I opened my online banking account home page, an advert appeared across the whole of the screen.

This seems to be happening whenever I visit a site. I have tried System Restore and have also looked at Security to see if there is anything which is being allowed through the Firewall, but the problem is still there.

Please does anybody know what else I can do?

Download and install free home edition

www.avast.com

disconnect from net - uninstall exiting antivirus- install avast - reconnect to net update it and do a thorough scan of local disks and archives .

Access these options by right clicking "a" avast ball on bottom right of your screen . You have 60 days to register for free product key.

It has 7 functions including Web Shield - turn off any you don't want e.g. VRDBS. Keep it as your antivirus.

Also install yahoo toolbar with CA Antispy - open I.E. update it and scan - kill any nasties.

hope this helps

Many thanks for your help but, unfortunately, it hasn't resolved the problem. I had already installed Avast which appears to be working well. I have now downloaded CA Antispy and have removed a number of 'bugs'? but, even as I'm writing this, yet another advertisement has appeared across the screen.

I have noticed however, that the majority of these adverts are French and as I now live in France I'm wondering whether this throws any light on the situation.

When I looked at the Firewall yesterday I noticed an exception which was called 'Bonjour' and as I didn't know what this was, I deleted it thinking this would resolve the situation but it obviously hasn't.

Regards.

Hi,

I take it you are using I.E. ? Worth checking the settings -click Tools and make sure the Pop up Blocker is on and set to Medium ( You could try High to see ), While you're there, may as well check the Phishing filter is on automatic too.

Thanks for the info. From reading the article, I don't think that deleting Bonjour has had any major effect. I only use ITunes for the purpose of downloading to my IPod.

Regards.

My Computer

Thanks again. I've followed your instructions and everything is as it should be although I have altered my Pop up Blocker from Medium to High. I have just performed another scan and it shows that there are 17 Items and 20 Object. Most of them are Tracking Cookies, but one is an Adware - Zango Search Assistant and 3 are Trojan -FBrowsingAdvisor. I wish I knew what all this meant but I am Removing the whole lot. (With Trojan, I have no other option but to Remove).

Appreciate your help.

Regards.

My Computer

Looks like a lot of tracking cookies - reduce this by clicking Tools>Internet Options >Privacy , tick the override automatic... box, Dot Accept First Party, and Dot Block Third Party, click OK

O.K. Have done that. At the moment, everything is quiet and I don't appear to have had any adverts for the past 90 minutes, but we shall have to see what tomorrow brings. However, I'm a bit concerned that I could only remove 1 out of the 3 Trojan viruses. Would there be a reason for this?

My Computer

I presume you mean CA would only let you remove 1 ?

Click start Orb>Computer>drive C , double click Program Files x86 , double click CA Yahoo! Antispy yellow folder.

Right click CAYahooAntispy .exe , click Properties>Compatibility, check Run this prog. as Admin. box, click Apply >OK.

Avast and Defender are very good , tho they're not really looking for annoyances like cookies and adbots.

In case you have any lurking on your hard drive, download Spybot S&D

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

Install by right clicking the spybot.exe and run as admin - (during install you can uncheck the Teatimer box ). Update it and do a full scan - you may as well as it's free.

Hope this helps

I'll throw in my own personal advice:

Internet Explorer, Outlook, and Windows Mail (or whatever they're calling Outlook Express these days), should be used with caution. They're getting more secure over time, but historically, these products have been the infection point for many Windows users.

My recommendation would be to install Firefox or Opera. Personally, I prefer Opera, though Firefox 3 is a nice step forward. Either web browser should be significantly more secure than IE. Just make sure not to download/install some random thing just because the website you're on prompts you to.

For email, if you're not using webmail, it might be worth giving Thunderbird a try.

I won't promise that you'll never get a virus by switching to one of these alternative products - I will only promise that your odds of infection will drop by a good margin.

My Computer

Sorry, I meant CA. Have Run this again and have managed to delete Trojan. I've also downloaded SpyBot S & D and that threw up yet another load of 'infections' which have now been removed. However, I'm still getting adverts coming up on the screen.

I think my only other option is to go in search of someone who can sort this out better than I - a female wrinkly who is way out of depth.

Many thanks for your help.

Regards.

My Computer

I much appreciate your advice, but at this point in time I have started to glaze over and am losing the will to live. When I'm feeling a bit more confident, I'll take another look at what you've posted and jump into action. Thanks anyway.
