No emails

We have two laptops

Mine runs Vista Home Premium, AVG 8.0 and I am using Windows Mail for my emails. The computer is connected by Ethernet cable to the router. On mine I can surf the internet and can send/receive emails OK.

My wife's laptop has the same OS and AVG but uses Thunderbird for emails. It is connected wirelessly to the router. My wife can surf the internet but cannot send/receive emails as the connection to the incoming email server times out. We each use the same incoming and outgoing mail servers.

Two point to note.

1. I recently had to change to outgoing mail server on both laptops due to a change in broadband supplier. Before that both email systems were OK. Just after changing the outgoing email server on my wife's laptop the system worked OK as we were able to send test emails to each other. I have now changed my wife's laptop so it uses Windows Mail and the same problem arises.

2. The AVG was reinstalled on both laptops soon after the change in outgoing mail server due to a fault it developed after being automatically updated so it's still in a learning phase.

I am leaning towards a problem caused by AVG blocking the connection but I don't know how to check this.

I would appreciate advice with this problem.
