Using Telnet or similar

As you can see on another thread I am having trouble with one of our two laptops sending and receiving emails.

Both laptops have the same OS (Vista Home Premium), AVG 8.0 and use Windows Mail for emails.

One cannot send/receive emails due to the incoming mail server timing out. The outgoing mail server was changed just before the problem arose and the AVG was reinstalled when it developed a fault after automatically updating.

It has been suggested that I use "Run" and then "telnet mail.xxxxx.co.uk 110" to check the connection. However I cannot get any meaningful output as the "black" screen that should appear with the results only remains on view for a fraction of a second.

(Just as
athought
it took me ages to find Run - why is Vista so much less simple to use than XP?)

I see from Windows Help that I could use winrs instead but when I try to use "winrs /?" I get no useful output due to the black screen staying for so short a time.

Can anyone offer me help with this problem and point me to a useful webpage with help on this matter?

It's not less simple... the Run box has been integrated into the Start menu search box.

If that black box dissapears straight away, it's because the program has finished. In this case, it means you've not run it correctly, so the program returns an error and closes. Start up a command prompt (click start, type cmd, Enter). Then type your telnet command in there to see what it says.

Thanks for the help CreepinJesus

I used "cmd enter" and then the "telnet command" and got the reply "telnet is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program of batch file" so I now know that I cannot use telent with Vista.

I again used "cmd enter" and the command "winrs /?" and a black screen appeared with all the winrs commands.

So it works so far.

Now all I need to do is to find the command to check the connection to my incoming mail server.

One final point. Can I direct the screen output whilst in cmd mode to the printer? It used to be posible under DOS to append the cammand with "> lpt1" but it does not work under Vista.

Alternatively how can I print the infor on the screen?

Yes but only if activated. Many machines have this command hidden as was the case on both our Vista laptops.

It's not too difficult to
activate
- see other posts on this forum.

There is a telnet client in Vista Premium. Go to Control Panel (classic)/Programs and Features. Click on 'turn windows features on or off. Put a check box in 'Telnet Client'. Can't remember if you have to reboot.

Hope this is useful.

Beat me to it, Gary :(

Not leaving without saying something, though, so here's a shortcut: type 'optionalfeatures' in the Start menu search, and you get the Add/remove Windows Features thing :)

Thanks CreepinJesus. I like it when I learn something too. :D
