Well, I have two labtops, one (gateway) with Vista and one (compaq) with XP. Each one runs on a Netgear router and for the first few months I had the Gateway which I bought last December there were no problems. Around August I could get to the start page on Internet Explorer but when trying to get to another website my page loaded half way slowly on my usually fast connection then stopped, no error message no internet conection problem screen, just kept loading but couldn't load any farther. I've tried everything, updating Vista and McAfee, resetting Internet Explorer, deleting cookies and favorites as well as other internet files, scanning for spyware, nothing works. Big thanks to anyone with details.

Details:
2006 Gateway M-6816 model with Vista Home Premium 32-bit, wireless connection, Netgear router provided by Comcast, Internet Explorer 7.

How do you actually connect to the router, are both machines wireless or are you connecting any by Ethernet cable ?

Sorry I have no idea about the difference in programming. I've never used a laptop but my machine here are all desktops with my Vista one being connected via Ethernet cable and the XP and WinME both connecting via wireless to my router without problems.

I know that usually if I have any problems with connections my first action is to log onto the router via my Vista machine to check if there are any problems the other action is to switch off the router for a few seconds then switch it back on, there have been times when I've had to do that about 3 times before it will work again.

Have you tried turning the router on and off ?

You should have instructions with your router giving you an address that you put into your browsers address bar, that will bring up the configuration pages for your router.

It is usually better doing this while connected to the router with Ethernet cable rather than trying with just wireless.

So, how would I log onto my router from my labtop? Or, at least how would you do it from your desktop?
It is usually by going to one of these addresses (depending on your router):
http://192.168.0.1/
http://192.168.1.0/
http://192.168.1.1/ (this is the one for my Netgear wireless router)
http://192.168.0.0/

You will then normally be asked for a username/password. If you have never changed these, then (depending on your router) try these common combinations:
Username: admin
Password: admin

Username: admin
Password: password

Username: admin
Password: (leave blank)

Alternatively, you will probably find the correct user/password on one of these sites:
http://www.routerpasswords.com/
http://www.phenoelit-us.org/dpl/dpl.html

Of course, your router manual should give all of this info anyway.

If none of the above worked then open a command prompt on your computer and type \ipconfig
Look for "Default Gateway" and that is the IP address of your router. Plug it in a browser and then it will prompt you for a username and password.
