Internet browsing issues - is Javascript the culprit?

So I've been having issues lately with Hotmail and Facebook and DeviantART. Since these websites all use scripts, and the problem occurs in IE and Firefox, I suspect it's a Javascript issue. But I don't know enough about scripts to know what kind of script is causing the problem, and I've tried reinstalling the latest version of Javascript and rebooting my computer and the problem still occurs.

Things like popup menus (e.g. the notification panel in Facebook), and other dynamic features (e.g. viewing/deleting comments and favourites in the DeviantART message centre) either don't load at all or look like they're loading (i.e. my mouse turns into the waiting pointer) but never do.

I've also run full scans with updated versions of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (which picked up a trojan), Ad-Aware and AVG free. Could some malware be causing this problem?

It could be. If you had one trojan, you might have another or something worse. Run a boot time scan with Avast. Uninstall AVG if you install Avast. You could try Spybot, Superantispyware and MSRT as well. Run all with deep scan. Try this as well. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html?ltr=S

I installed Avast to find that I couldn't run a boot time scan using the free version, and SFC and MSRT came up clean, but Superantispyware picked up and removed one trojan.

Spybot picked up a tracking cookie and a trojan I think.

I have some of my Javascript features back, but am still getting errors trying to retrieve Facebook status feeds and lists of people who are online and such :(

Forgot to add that one of the trojans (picked up by Spybot) was 'MyWay.MyWebSearch'. I don't know what the trojan that Superantispyware found was because its trial period expired so I can't view what was quarantined/removed.

You can run a boot time scan using the free version. It should be an option when you start the avast program and go to the settings tab in the top left corner drop down menu. Schedule a boot time scan. Then restart.

Yeah I tried that, but it was greyed out... maybe I need to run a scan normally first? I'm doing that now.

Hmm, you'd probably have to be signed in as an administrator. Try right clicking on the program icon and checking run as admin.

I'm using the only user account in safe mode - with administrator privileges and using 'run as administrator'.

Well, you can try a repair install from programs and features in the control panel. Just click on the avast and it should give you the option to repair. I don't kniow why this would be grayed out. I suppose it doesn't matter as long as you can run a full scan inside windows.

Are you still having your initial problems though?
