Windows Mail not responding

I have searched everywhere on this forum, every other forum I can find, and Google Search. I cannot find the definitive answer to the problem of "Windows mail not responding"
I have Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS. I use Norton 360 and since starting my search the only thing I've done is I have turned off email scanning.
There appears to be several people with the Windows mail not responding problem; there has to be an answer and a fix.
Please don't tell me to get rid of Norton unless Norton has been definitely identified as the culprit.
I've seen, several times, to switch to Windows Live Mail. I have 8 POPs account that I monitor.
I've got about 2000 messages in 21 Local folders

Re: Windows Mail not responding

Hello Dahawk, and welcome to Vista Forums.

As a test, I would recommend to uninstall Norton completely to see if that may help. You can always reinstall it if it did not help any.

You might also install Windows Live Mail as a test to. If it is able to, it will import all of the Windows Mail accounts and messages by default. You can use both email clients to.

Windows Mail problems

Hope this helps some,

Re: Windows Mail not responding

So here is some more data about my "Not Responding" problem.

It seems to happen only when I'm running Find message. I do this quite a bitp to find messages. I typically would open the Find window, click on browse, and choose Windows Mail and Include Subfolders. I would always find my message(s). Lately I've been getting zero results, which was very confusing because I knew emails were there. A little while ago I tried clicking on Local Folders and got teh sme results. When I go to the specific folder I know the email(s) should be in, I get the correct results.

It seems that when I use the same Find Message window and change any of teh parameters - that's when I get the Not Responding indication, I click on the restart and a few secomds later I'm back up.

I've been using the above Find Message procedure for years. Only for the last maybe 3 months have I run into this Not Responding issue. Probably about that time I turned off Windows indexing because I kept running into suggestions that Windows Indexing chews up too much processing. Also, I use Copernic for indexing; I was using Google but I thought that was causing me problems.

What do you think?
Thank you!!

Re: Windows Mail not responding

Dahawk,

That would be the cause then. The Find message feature in Windows Mail is dependant on the Index being turned on. You will need to turn it bacl on to be able to use the feature.

I reinstalled Windows Search and have let it run for a few days. I have also reset Windows mail iaw with Brink's tutorial.

My "Not Responding" problem still exists.

Re: Windows Mail not responding

Dahawk,

In that case, I woud recommend using the free program Windows Live Mail instead. It is more stable and better IMO.
