ISP Data Caps and Norton IS 2009 bug?

I downloaded a bandwidth meter, after getting excess data usage on my cable bill. We only surf, upload pics, forums, occasional DL, etc. Nothing heavy.

Yesterday I used 750 mb just surfing!! the only DL I did was a 22mb Adware, to check for spyware.

no viruses, well protected here. I uninstalled yahoo, bitching that it must be that. I saw a drop, but not enough to use as much as i was, just surfing.

I got to thinking about how years ago, Norton (or McAffee I forget) used to DL mail to their server, scan it and then redownload it to your computer. I thought Norton must have a similar bug. I was 31 days into my 90 day trial, and that has been the only major change on here.

I uninstalled Norton and viola usage is down about 90%. I always thought it was strange that Norton never notified me of anything, but obviously it was busy doing something in the background. Just the occasional notification (rarely) that it found a problem and fixed it. Although they were idiotic notifications, like we found a cookie and fixed it. Really strange.

For those that are getting hit with data caps, or soon to be, here is a good little freeware app to monitor bandwidth:

ShaPlus Bandwidth Meter - Freeware to display bandwidth consumed for session, day and month

my yokel little cable isp has a data cap of 25GB which they never notified their customers about, so obviously they are history. DSL install on it's way.

I highly recommend checking out the bandwidth meter to monitor your data usage. it would be interesting to see if other Norton IS 2009 users see a similar high bandwidth glitch.

Re: ISP Data Caps and Norton IS 2009 bug?

oh yeah that isp is history. i also reported them to the FCC. Several ppl complained about lack of notification on any data caps. not to mention their a bumpkin ISP and haven't upgraded their equipment in decades. When i asked for the mac or IP that was using all the bandwidth, they had no record. lol good luck with that. they can pound sand.

getting DSL tommorow.

anyone with Norton IS 2009 needs to monitor their bandwidth for sure. no more issues here with skyrocketing bandwidth with normal use.

Re: ISP Data Caps and Norton IS 2009 bug?

I run Norton Is 2009 and also have been leaving cisco speed monitor on 24/7 just because it does a speed test hourly and document charts because my isp has been having issues and I want some sort fo documentation to send to them because ive had so many technical calls im already dealing with corporate on getting my speed issues resolved they could only give me a time fram of in january to get it fixed so come feb 1st ill be sending my results and asking why they have not repaired their issue yet. Ive also used bandwidth monitor vista 2 to monitor bandwidth usage and i have no issues with nis 2009 thats on 3 pc's so its nto an issue.

Re: ISP Data Caps and Norton IS 2009 bug?

thx for that info on Norton. Maybe my ISP was double dipping somehow, although it was only on this pc that the Norton bandwidth problem occurred. it was a 90 day trial version. maybe that's why?

appreciate it. I'm on DSL now with a 6mb speed and what a difference. this is truly broadband. glad i dumped the yokel cable company.
