There's no Windows Mail

Hi
I upgraded from XP to Vista Ultimate 32 SP1 yesterday and I'm gradually getting used to everything and adapting all to my needs. I want to install Windows mail, but don't know where to find it. It's not in the startup menu.

Can someone help? Or is there a place where I can download it?

Hello Dogberry, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It should also be located at C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe. You can alos create a shortcut from the .exe file to place where you like for easy use (ex: Start Menu)

There's no winmail.exe. there is a windowsmailgadget.exe, a wab.exe and a wabmig.exe.

In the us-eng sub folder there is a winmail.exe.mui

You might see if running a sfc /scannow command can fix this for you after a restarting the computer when finished.

Typing that in run with the space opens something briefly, but it disappears. Without the space windows can't find it.

I don't know how to open an elevated command prompt.

Ahh.. Basic. All programs is so small there at the bottom. I didn't even think of an XP similarity. At any rate it says I must be an administrator running a console session. I am an administrator but how do I get to run a console session?

G'Day Dogberry,

Like you, until acouple of days ago, I didn't for the life of me understand what an 'elevated command prompt' meant, let alone figure out how to open it. So briefly, here we go;

An Elevated Command Prompt is a Command Prompt opened using Administrator permissions and User Account Control.

  • Command Prompt opens up as; C:\Users\<system user name>>

  • Elevated Command Prompt or Administrator: Command Prompt, opens up as; C:\Windows\system32>
Here's how to open the Elevated Command Prompt;

Left Click on the Start Orb or button, and in the 'Start Search' clear white space, type in cmd.exe

Under the Programs List, Right Click on the cmd.exe icon. From the drop-down menu, Left Click Run as Administrator, under User Account Control [UAC] Left Click Continue...... Administrator: Command Prompt window should now show on your desktop.

I hope that this makes thing clearer for you.:huh:

Well, I still haven't solved my problem, though. One is a bit nervous to play around too much with the new stuff.

I started using Outlook and on sending a "Test" at Microsoft's request :) as a reply I got a message about e-mail. There was a section about newsgroups with a link. It took me to a "Communities Windows mail" but the Microsoft newsgroup requires me to logon with a password. That seems to cause a problem.

Is this "the "windows mail"? Are the Newsgroups not download to my computer? How can I set up a shortcut on my desktop? I still can't find Windows mail anywhere on my computer.

A little bit more:

Although there is no winmail.exe in the windows mail folder, and it isn't a file that can be displayed as a shown "hidden file". I decided to see if it was actually there and made a desktop shortcut using what Shawn gave and it worked!

C:\Program Files\Windows Mail\WinMail.exe

I still have a problem with the password, though. It might have something to do with my server provider. I will check.

Ok. It's all resolved (for now at least). I've managed to transfer all my mail and I have my newsgroups running. Many thanks to all who helped.
