Vista connected to internet but not

I have Vista Ultimate 64, and it is showing that is connected to the internet, however it will not open webpages, do updates, etc.... It also will not let me into the router (192.168.1.1), just says it's not connected. For what it is worth, it also will not connect when plugged directly into the modem. DHCP is on. I am on a laptop (XP) using a wireless connection through the same router now, so I know the internet is working. Yes I have read the forums to death for ideas, I am about out. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem as you Jestur. I had to swap out my motherboard due to it failing and replaced it with an Asus P5N-D. Before the swap, everything worked fine. Now, I cannot view any web pages. In the Network and Sharing Center, it shows that I am connected to the internet and my network and all my devices are listed on the network map(desktop, laptop, wireless router, DSL modem, and network printer. I can print a test page to my network printer and access my files on my Laptop (Vista Home Premium x 32) with no problems, but when I open my browsers on my desktop( I use IE 7 and Firefox), I get an error in IE 7 saying that "IE cannot display website" and get a blank screen in Firefox "untitled". In the Command Prompt, I was able to ping my desktop, laptop, wireless router, and DSL modem successfully. Here is what else I have done so far:

-Went to Control Panel>Internet Option>Connections>Lan settings & I double checked to make sure that my lan settings were set to auto detect.
- Made sure that DHCP is enabled and IP adresses were auto assigned
-Closed my browsers and went to Control Panel>Internet Options>General Tab>Delete Browsing History and clicked delete all
-disabled both Firewalls (Windows and McAfee)
-Opened the command Prompt and did the "ipconfig /flushdns" command and rebooted my desktop.
-Upated my Ethernet Controller driver (Nvidia nForce controller)

With all that said, it definately sounds like a DNS Server/ Browser issue and not a device problem. If anyone else has any more suggestions, I would be glad to hear them. Thanks!

It would appear from a series of messages in this forum, that a fair number of people are having similar problem in using Vista to access the internet using a web browser.

in my case it will happen with three different browsers (not particularly a browser issue), other machine behind the same router (running XP) can access pages without a problem (not really a router issue) Same machine with Linux live CD's have no problem accessing the internet (not a hardware, nic card, cat 5 cable issue.)

Since the server get's an ip address from the router, some tcp connections work. When I browse (attempt to) the internet by name, "it" attempts to pull down pages (so DNS is working)

something in the mix is not passing http traffic back into the Vista env.

and we are all have the same "type" of problem, with maybe different causes or perhaps a common central cause?

I ran into a problem similar to this and after checking my router settings, I found that my WLAN DHCP was on a different subnet than my LAN settings. Changing that made me able to connect to the internet. My router problem was one I forgot to consider when I bought the router...my "Allow Wireless Control" setting was Disabled.
