Delete corrupt mail file?

I am running Vista Business with Service Pak 1. Windows Mail indicates that I have a corrupt file : C:\Users\Danny\AppData\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Backup\new.
I have attempted to run check disk via all the suggested methods posted on the forum to no avail. I performed a hardisk diagnostics provided by my laptop manufacturer, which passed.
Can I simply delete the "New" folder (through "Explorer") and create a replacement 'new' folder?'

Hello Danorevret, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You could use PROBLEM TWO in the tutorial below to reset Windows Mail back to default. You can try with the backups first. If that does not help, then reset with only the messages backed up.

You might also check to see if your antivirus program may have any email scanning options enabled. If so, you should disabled or turn off that option to prevent it from interfering with Windows Mail.

Hope thish helps,
Shawn

Re: Windows Mail problems

THANKS BRINK:

You instructions and screen shots were clear and easy to follow. However, I was unable to delete the "Backup" folder (PROBLEM TWO, Step 8) in Windows Mail, in which a folder named "new" containis the corrupted file. Several attempts to delete it continually yielded an error message (Error 0x80070091).

Rebooting my system did restore my Windows Mail, but in so doing created another "new" folder (under Backup) and renamed the orginial "new" folder, "old". I could not delete the "old" folder and received the aforementioned error message.

Despite various workarounds and Administrator commands to activate "Check Disk" I cannot run the utility to repair or delete the corrupted file and continue to get a corrupted file message pop up each time I start Windows Mail.

Danorevret,

Did you make sure that all instances of Windows Mail (winmail.exe) were closed in Task Manager before resetting Windows Mail?

If you did, then you might try from within Safe Mode to see if you are able to.
