Problem with opening downloaded programs

I downloaded Version 3.01.1 of Firefox from Mozilla in order to replace Version 3.5, which was malfunctioning with graphics problems. However, I could not istall it as I was given the message that the downloaded file was from an Unknown Publisher and that there was no digital signature or that the signature was invalid. It asked me if I wanted to install anyway so I said yes. However it would not execute and said it would notify MSft of the problem.

I've tried downloading other files, Avast for example, and got the same message(s). I went to tools/internet options/Advanced/Security and checked "Allow software to run or install even if the signature is invalid" and unchecked "Check for sinatures on downloaded programs". This didn't work either.

I would appreciate any help on this.

I'm sorry for being so stubborn. Before I do it could you explain why it will work now wherein it didn't work an hour ago. Has something changed at Firefox in the last hour that has impacted the situation? I'm only trying to be secure on this problem. Whenever I don't understand something I feel insecure.

What's the address for the 3.0 version you're trying to use? Also what exactly is the problem with 3.5, we'd probably be better off fixing that rather then using an older version of firefox.

On second thought, the fact that this isn't limited to firefox indicates there is something wrong on your computer, whether it be malware, virus, or corrupted dll. I'm gonna search around for a bit, I'll see what I can come up with.

Edit: Check out this bit MS had to say, sounds like it fits your problem

Have you been tinkering with services/registry/group policies?

I looked at the MS bulletin you pointed me to. Actually Norton Tech Support tried some of those when they tried to fix my problem so that I could open their downloaded Internet Security program. They were unable to solve the problem and said I had errors on a bad cluster on my drive. They suggested reformating the disk. I am in the process of doing that.
