ALL web browsers stop working!!

Hi there, i am new to these forums :geek: and hope you can help me?

I am running Windows Vista Business x64 SP2 with all the latest security updates.

My problem is ALL of my web browsers simply stop working after a while. If i use IE 8 i get the message : "cannot display the web page"

once i get this error i cannot even use any other browser, so Firefox / Safari / Chrome does not ever work.

If i ping the website it works fine, so the connection isnt the problem. Technically the broswers dont crash they HANG. Firefox and IE close, but when you check task manager the process is still running, and you CANNOT close the process.

the only way to fix this, is to restart and it is getting very annoying.

help is appreciated..

any ideas? bcoz its happened again.. it never used to happen before SP2, but i dont want to uninstall that.

i dont think its TCP/IP related, bcoz i can still ping the websites and get a result back.. and Spotify and other internet applications work fine.

I spent an hour last night going through a 2 year thread on another forum dealing with this issue. When I got to 2009, a lot of posters were claiming that the problem was with Avast, esp. the "Web Shield" component. As I continued, others said that they uninstalled Zone Alarm and the problem disappeared. A number of posts said they switched to Comodo and have had no problems since. I read up on Comodo, and liked what I saw in reviews in the computer press and by users. So I switched. Personally I like the idea of an integrated firewall and anti-virus.

All I can say is that I have browsing all day with Firefox or IE 8.0 and have not had a problem. I could never get past 40 minutes without the browsers quitting (and it just as easily happened in at little as 5 minutes).

..title starts with "Peculiar..."

Are you using either Avast anti-virus or Zone Alarm?

Try 1) disabling Avast Web Shield OR

2) uninstall both programs and try Comodo Internet Security instead.

i dont understand why i should get rid of ZA or AVG anti virus. when they worked fine in XP PRO.

im not using Avast either..

Wbva

You should un-install both because they ar eknown to have problems with vista and win 7

This is not a vista problem that will be corrected by reverting to XP SP3.

Anyway, I also recommend Comodo, and it's even available in a 64 bit version for you.

i might just go back to a stable XP PRO SP3 what do you think??

Hello wbva,
I'm usure reading through these posts which particular firewall you are currently using. Please clarify.
Has your router / modem a firewall?
I gather you are using AVG Anti Virus - - - free or pro?
Please also list what other [ malware ] progs you have installed.

Welcome to the "browser hang" club which began on or around SP2. I have posted in Jasmine's thread as well and we have been trying to find the solution but in the end nothing seems to correct the issue.

This problem is specific to all browsers because I can game all night and run file sharing programs without any loss of connection. The "diagnose connection" message has almost became a permanent fixture on my monitor while trying to surf the web. This problem is widespread as you can see if you do a few searches for it and I am not sure why MS has not addressed this issue yet. This problem is rampant in this forum also and it is described in many forms but it leads back to the same problem which begun with SP2.

Only glitches are reported.
Most of us have breezed through SP2 without any problem.

Nope, everything Edilee entered is absolute fact. Every single person that I know that has installed SP2 along with AVG and Zonealarm has experienced the exact problems outlined in this thread. Your post however is completely unsubstantiated. Also, this fault with SP2 is extremely frustrating; restarting after every 30mins or so of browsing has led to me setting up dual booting and booting into ubuntu when I only want to do some browsing. I'd suggest other people do the same. Maybe then Microsoft might actually listen to their customers.

Cheers.

uninstall your firewall , does the issue go away? if it does you have your answer , issues like this are ALWAYS firewall related
