Favorites issue - cannot delete a folder

I'm running Vista Business x64 which came with my PC. From my old PC which was running XP Pro x32 I copied over my Favorites and all has worked OK for the last 8 months. On my old XP system I renamed the browser links folder to "_IE Links" which is what I copied over to my new system. I've always had the latest IE browser installed on my system and since the release of FireFox I've always had the latest installed and primarily use it as my browser. I also have multiple PC (WinXP x32, Vista x32, Win7 x32). The big challenge was keeping the browser favorites in-sync so I installed Xmarks as an add-in for FF and IE. This worked great until this week and I noticed that Xmarks had a sync issue. I started to look into the problem and discovered that in the Favorites folder I had two folders for "_IE Links". Looking at the entries in Windows Explorer the names look to be the same. If I opened the first it only had one folder in it thus I knew that this was not valid, looking at the contents of the second everything looked ok and when I use FF or IE they show the correct list of bookmarks. When I attempt to delete the first "_IE Links" (the bad one) Windows Explorer goes through the motion of deleting the folder but it remains listed. I also tried deleting it in Safe mode but got the same results.

Any idea how I remove the bogus "_IE Links" folder and its contents of one folder?
