POP server problems!!

Hi i started using thunderbird for my mail today (only for gmail) but i keep getting the error "could not connect to the server pop.gmail.com: the connection was refused."

i cant understand this as my server settings are exactly what the gmail website says they should be and i have allowed thunderbird access to the internet through my firewall.

any help would be greatly appreciated as ive heard thunderbird is great and i would like to see for myself!

Hi and welcome to vistaX

are you able to log on Gmail using a web browser? were you able to use thunderbird and it stopped working or has it never worked

Often passwords can have a spce at the end and you would not see it. Have you tried copying and pasting the user name and password?

Thunderbird absolutely has a place for the password. I use it myself but im not on that machine right now. Im assuming you have a username and passowrd you use to access gmail via web browser, right. tell you what give me 10 minutes and I can install thunderbird

be right back

OK you fill in your account settings without the password. then when you go to logon it asks you for your password and check the boxtaht says use password manager. see enclosed picture

let me know how it turns out

Ken

Edit: i wasn't going to have thunderbird on this machine but I think I will leave it

when i click on inbox (i presume this is what you mean by log on) no box asking for my password appears? i have noticed however that on my setup of the program the automatic settings for gmail do not appear as gmail but as google mail instead. ie instead of pop.gmail.com mine says pop.googlemail.com. i have changed these but still no luck

Something is hosed in your setup. did you change anything from the default thunderbird settings like port, or secure socket, or anything???

Do you have a firewall or antivirus that might be stopping it?

this is a picture of what settings work

new picture added with correct settings

Do you have a firewall or antivirus that might be stopping it?

i have allowed thunderbird to access the internet in my firewall. i use avira antivirus but cannot see anything in that blocking thunderbird as there is no built in firewall just scanning

Maybe try un-installing thunderbird an re-installing it?

Have you enabled POP to be used on e-mail clients in the Gmail settings on Gmail?

When you log in to Gmail on the web, go to Settings>Forward and POP/IMAP and it should say POP is enabled.
