*Solved * Internet woes (connected but can't browse with any consistency)

Fix edit ************

In case anyone has the same problem, after a lot of work I finally found the problem.

It was a combination of Eset and utorrent.

Eset WAP was doing scans on everything utorrent was downloading, which was crippling me.

After setting an exclusion on utorrent, so it no longer scanned everything, my problems went away!

It seems so elementary now...

Thanks for all the help regardless.

Hi guys,

I'm a first timer. I've used this forum before to look for soloutions but this time I can't seem to find any answers for my particular problem, and I've pulled out a lot of hair over this.

My situation:

I live in Japan. My apartment building provides internet, in the form of a network. Each floor has it's own internet connection, which is operated by the ISP (it's a big one).

A week and a half ago my internet connection went on the fritz. In a really annoying way. I can connect to irc. I can use MSN. I can use my torrent program. But I can't web browse with any consistency. That is to say, I can open web pages (like right now), but I am soon unable to do so. I have to hit spend 5-10 minutes hitting refresh to get a page up, and even then it just MIGHT load up properly. I also have trouble retrieving my email.

Several other residents reported the same problem, but it soon rectified itself (they said they didn't do anything, it just kind of sorted itself out). I'm the only one who still can't browse properly.

Now, I bitched and moaned at the ISP to send someone over, which they did, but they said they found nothing wrong with the line or the network, and indeed, the ISP man connected his own laptop to the network in front of me and it worked fine, so of course the problem is me. The ISP guy suggested I try closing some windows (i had several different folders open), which just really made me angry (I didn't show it, i'm not a total asshole).

I have no problems connecting to different networks using wireless (there is a public wireless point in our lobby) or even using cables (I tried using a friends connection). So it seems to be a problem specifically with my laptop and my network.

I've tried all manner of things, changing cables, flushing dns, winsock, etc etc. Nothing works. The connection just seems to come and go.

I'm really at my wits end.

I suspect it's some sort of DNS problem (this is from what i've gleaned from people with similar problems), but really have no idea.

Any and all tips/suggestions are most welcome.

<insert star wars quote>Thank you obi wan, you're my only hope</geek>

can you go to start>search>type cmd>right click and run as admin>type ipconfig /all, using the built in snipping tool (type snipping in search) take a screenshot of the output and upload it to us using the attachment icon (shaped like a paperclip) in the reply form.

thanks

You are correct sir.

ok so you are connected and have both dns, and dhcp. since you dont ahve problems with IRC, torrents, etc, Im wondering if it is a browser problem. You using IE? have you tried another borwser to see if it works?

Tried both IE and Firefox. They're both the same, intermittently working a little bit. On a different network, however, they both work fine.

Hi brother,

Sometimes, you just needs to renew the IP connection...try to do that as follows:
1. Open cmd as you told before.
2. type in ipconfig/release
3. then type in ipconfig/renew

this will renew the connection and it may be helpful to you.

Also as you told, you may try to use another browser and check.

Best Regards

ok its not the browser. how about firewalls, and antivirus? something is interfering with port 80. two things you can try. One is try to go to a site that has HTTPS, like a bank or something. Since thats a different port it might not be affected. If still no joy, you can try using openDNS as a browser proxy. you would then know if it is something abt IP, or browsser that the network doesn't like

Hope this helps

I use Eset Smart Security, and have tried turning off the firewall/antivirus but again, no joy.

Good AV, use it myself. did you turn it off by clicking on do not filter netwrok traffic?

another thing you can do is to ping msn.com:80. that uses the same prot as the browser does.

you can also try this. go to speadtest.net and do a speed test. it will tell y ou your latency and the download speed using port 80 the same port that the browsers use.

In your original post, you said something about a different network for each floor, and then later, you said your connection and browsing works fine on "another network".

Does this mean that if you take your machine to another floor and connect it there, your browsers all work OK?

If so, it's not on your "end"; it's a problem with the "network" on your floor and you will need to get the building management involved -- or whomever else maintains the "networks".

If that's not what you meant -- sorry, I misunderstood what you said.

When the browser works, it works fine!

I said before that I thought it was a DNS problem because when the browser decided not to work, and I go to the connection and click diagnose, it comes up with a "cannot communicate with the dns server (172.16.24.254)". The setting are all on automatic so this confuses me greatly.

Mark:

You are correct in your understanding of my post, but other people can use my particular connection and use the internet fine.

My Computer

Any more advice chaps?

here is a diagnostic workaround

when it happens go into search type cmd and ipconfig /dnsflush then ipconfig /renew

if that works it absolutely is DNS related. If so you may be able to get your ISP working on it

Good luck and let us know
