annoying little red crosses!

Hello, a few days ago I noticed that when I went on google maps I could no longer see them (white box, red crosses and grey zoom level) I can see the satellite page though but that has a little red cross in top left corner. These also show up when I went into help and support offline. However when I go into my husband's user account everything is as it should be. This is happening on various websites also. I have tried doing everything google troubleshoot has advised but still can't get it back.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Running Vista Home Edition 32 bit.

That means it cannot find anything to display. Why it cannot find it on one computer and can on another, I don't know.

Thanks for reply...... I haven't tried Opera or Firefox. Also this is happening on the same computer - my husband's user account is ok and mine is not?

Something I have just been trying is javascript:navigator.useragent in the browser window on each user account: my husband's come up with Mozilla etc etc but my user account doesn't come up with anything - could this be a registry thing, file association etc etc?

It looks like your red X problem is probably a Java applet related problem. Take a look at this solution on the Java website, "Red X image displayed where the applet should be, applets won't run" http://www.java.com/en/download/help/redximage.xml

This particular article is slightly older -- but it's very informational, as a starting point. Then, you can look through the Java website to see if there's a solution that is current and relates to your particular situation. There's also a huge number of articles on Google that refer to applets not loading, and those annoying red Xs.

Hi dee

first the problem is something is blocking the image that is supposed to be in the box with the red "X". It can be caused by having IE in protected mode or by preventing javascript from running. Have any settings been changed in IE lately?

Hi all, well I have been battling this for a few ours, this is what I did:

As per suggestion I downloaded Java (didn't have it on my system?) did everything and made no difference, then when I saw Dom's reply about flash player it began ringing bells. I have had problems with this for a long time since the update. Every time I restarted I would have to 'run as administrator' for it to work in You Tube!

So I uninstalled flash player in safe mode saw the show details that it would delete flash9i.ocx and flashutil9i plus the 10c one on reboot, but when I rebooted (still in safe mode) the flash9i.ocx and flashutil9i is still there? So I rebooted and went online and hey presto my maps work and everything is as it should be. Now my question is how do I get You Tube to work!!!! I haven't tried it yet but I know I am probably going to get the same problem when I do the update?

Thank you so much for all your help but will probably be back with this flash player thing!

Well I have been on You Tube and yes it says as predicted "Hey you either have Javascript turned off or an old version of Adobe.......Now my question is how do I install the flash player update and keep it there and why does it not delete all references to flash player on reboot? Scripting of Java applets are enabled in my browser.

Will download the flash update in safe mode and see how we go.

Ok this is what I did and the result:

In safe mode with networking (although 9 version is still there?) ran as administrator to install update - update installed (10c) - rebooted - went into flash player and 10c still there - went online - maps working - went on You Tube, not working, same message. Went into flash player and ran as administrator again installed update again and You Tube is working? I know when I restart etc will have to do all again as before!

So my question is what am I doing wrong as it will not keep the update there I guess?

One problem solved another emerges LOL!
