Hello

Internet options > advanced tab > reset button.

What are the things does pressing this reset button do, do you loose your favorites is the main thing.
I am not to bothered about loosing favorites in the favorites bar, and buttons that i have added.

But generally what things does pressing the "reset" button do or "reset"

IE 8.0.6001.18828

I've not got a problem as such, but IE will play up "now and then" so i will just switch to firefox,

But just wondered if there is something i can do or maybe try, as i do have to use IE as the main browser when i am doing some course work

I don't think you lose your favorites but don't cite me on that. At work if we cant get a customer to connect we have to reset their IE settings. All it does it starts up without add-ons, less security, resets any proxy's you set. mainy user set configurations. Hope this helps.

thanks for replying crucialHoax

So when it starts up with out add-ons, have these add-ons gone and you will have to "add" them again.

Like flashplayer etc.

I'll have to create a folder about IE, as i have never really bothered about IE settings, security, i don't even know what proxys i've set, let alone what they are.

IE automatically shutting down, at random times with no apparent reason, is this normally when you would consider pressing the reset button, i have never pressed this, but might give it a try

If it was crashing all the time as you state and would reset the settings and then quit using it lol. I use firefox, never had a problem. Everyone has their preference tho. Try resetting, if it doesn't work, try a different browser.

But why give up, surly there must be a fix for it.
This problem has been going on for years, how come microsoft haven't corrected the problem.

Some people i know use ie with no problems, myself i like to get to the cause of the problem, and find out why these things happen.

It just "bugs" me when i carn't or don't know how to fix it, when probably it can be fixed.

What about uninstalling and reinstalling, but that must be a last resort, in the mean time i'll check windows update..:D

EDIT
I'am just getting as much info as i can at the moment, then i will try out these idea's

Then definitely reset the browsers settings back to the defaults and go back and set them one by one till it produces the problem, then you know.

No I'll hang on a bit bfore i do anything.
I've just had a thought, can you give me any advice on "Hijackthis", "downloading" and "installing" or maybe a link so i can print it out, and i'll post a log.
I have done a search on hijack this, which brings up so many places to download it from, but not sure on any of these places or if i am downloading the latest version

Not sure if i can post it on this forum, but i'll post it somewhere.

I did this a few years ago on the xp machine, which i am on now, and had no problems in years.
But i did not print out the instructions, i was just getting started with computers then, and have completly forgot how you use Hijack this.

The only thing i remember is i had to change the name in program files to "sniper.exe"

HijackThis is more an analysis tool more than it is to actually clean things up. That tool lists every non-MS program that you have installed, so you if you cleaned the results you would end up with nothing but a lot of corrupt shortcuts lol.

No i have not done anything as yet, but if you are having problems with IE
Like automatically closing, or shutting down, i thought posting a hijack this log would show up something.

It was really just a thought, before i go messing around like i normally do..:D
Funny enough IE has been fine for a few days now, but that could be the bunch of updates i had the other day mostly security updates though
