404 error-page not found messages

Hi all! I'm having trouble with opening hyperlinks. As an example: in control panel, under power settings, it is highlighted to "change settings". When I click on that hyperlink, it takes me to a new window showing "404 error-page not found". I have a HP with vista home premium sp2 os. This happens on any window that I try to open a hyperlink on a windows window. I can open hyperlinks on emails or news items okay. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance, greynoodle.

Does it give the address of the page it can't find? See if you can read the address someplace. There might be something in the registry that is distorting the links.

For example if you have a program with %1 as the param in file associations any file passed to it with a space if the filename will be chopped at the space. It should be "%1" in quotes. Something similar may be chopping the links.

Thank you, MilesAhead! I did find the address, it sure was long. It did not have the spaces but I went ahead and typed it with the quotes as you suggested. Still comes back with 404 error-page not found. Greynoodle

Try download Malwarebytes anti-malware and run a quick scan. I never heard of this happening.

Hi MileAhead! I want to thank you for still trying. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes. Found 2 items and the program took care of them for me. I did a restart and went to control panel next. Tried to use the power settings and it went right to 404 error. I tried several other hyperlinks under control panel and got the same results. I'm afraid I'm going to have to go to HP support and work from there. I do appreciate your help, greynoodle.

I don't think you are infected, but rather a few links may be pointing to the wrong location. Could you copy paste the URL here so we can take a gander?

Assuming bright.net is your ISP, for some reason it sounds like it's linking the hyperlink you are clicking to the default search page. Did this just start happening, or it's the first time you've noticed it? You could always try a System Restore, but something does not sound right there. When I leave work, I'll take a deeper look into bright.net and see if I can find any known issues.

uid0, This has happened since I first brought the computer home. At that time I just thought it was something I was doing wrong. But recently I've wanted to change my power settings and I can't do it because of the error messages. I believe you're right about the system restore. I started talking to HP support and we are down to sys restore. I have things to do today so it will be tomorrow before I can devote time to that. I really appreciate your help and thoughts on this, greynoodle.

If that's the case, It may be worth it to back up your files and run a full factory recovery. If you need to do that, tap f11 at the HP invent screen when you turn your computer on. Be sure to back up your files, either in the recovery manager or from within the desktop enviroment.

Best of luck to ya'!
