Can't launch Internet Explorer

I have Vista home premium, 32 bit all current updates. I seem to be unable to launch the Windows Internet Browser. (I think it was IE8.) I think something happened to the registry when I launched firefox which I am now stuck with. I tried using a system restore to various earlier restore points. These efforts failed. I also could not re-load IE8 that I downloaded from the Vista page at Microsoft: I got the message that Vista found a more recent version. Indeed in the program files folder, there is a folder Internet Explorer. So I clicked on the .exe -- nothing. (The program circle whirled around then stopped.) What has happened? I suppose I'll get used to Firefox, but I don't trust the security of it. ( Of course I shouldn't trust the security of IE either should I ?)
