Problem:Vista/internet/images and similar

Hello all. Here's a challenge. I have a frustrating issue that perhaps this forum can help me with. Sorry for the length of my post but I want you to get enough detail to assist me.

Roughly 3 weeks ago, without any notice, my web experience came to a crawl. Before that my 1 year old Gateway 1975W quad had screamed across the internet through my ATT DSL. Let me describe the general problem:

1) Pages that are dominated by text load pretty well - but the green bar at the bottom usually drags behind the view. Then, in most instances, I get a "done but with errors on page notice in the bottom left corner.

2) Pages that have mixed text and images load pretty erratically and it seems to depend on the site itself as to the severity. Images, emocons, buttons, etc, are slow to load. In fact, they seem to load one at a time. Yahoo sports and You Tube are examples.

3) The most frustrating: when running a Google image search the page itself immediately loads but all I see is placecard holders. One by one the images come to life. Instead of the instantaneous page I am use to seeing - it can be a 10 second count.

4) Highly developed web pages, those with pretty graphics, lots of images and "stuff" load over brutal length of time while the info in the bottom left hand corner simply counts down all of the issues, "waiting on xyz", "waiting on advertisement abc", and sometimes it literally just counts down the remaining images.

Comments:
1) My 2wire hub never lost connectivity but does about every other day now.
2) I have Kapersky that swears I have no malware or viruses.
3) I have reset my browser (IE7), allowed controls to download images faster, and cleaned the C drive, etc. All the normal stuff has been completed.
4) I've gone in to dos prompt and turned off autotuning (from multiple site's recommendation).
5) I switched from TLS to SSL 2.0 (from one site's recommendation).
6) Defender firewall is off;Kapersky is on.
7) Phishing is off on both.
8) According to ATT my outbound and inbound speeds are humming.

The above did make a small uptick in speed but everything from GMail, Google image searches and complicated websites are still very slow. Can any of you help me? I just don't know where to go from here. All suggestion will be appreciated. Thank you.

The best way to try to solve this is step by step. You say that you checked for virus and its clean, we will start with that.

Now download and check for other malware with this:

Malwarebytes.org

If that comes up clean

Type in search, cmd, then right click on cmd (do not hit enter) then run as administrator. In cmd type this sfc /scannow. You get an error report. We will start working with that informatiion.

Check and update drivers.

Rich46, thanks for advice. I ran the malwarebytes.org, it found 0 issues. I am currently running the scannow (will report soon). Can you tell me though, how do I "check" drivers? Seriously, I'm not sure what you mean. Thanks.

My Computer

Drivers are easy to check

Go to search, type in, device manager. In device manger any drivers that are not working properly will show a yellow or red warning marker.

(I can't copy and paste the dos screen after it scanned) here is what is says:

Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.

C:\Windows\system32>

Don't worry, not bad news. The command is good, but lazy. Fixes only one file at a time. If it does not work after another 2 tries. We try plan B.

Just getting for plan B. Do you have a Vista DVD?

Do not do this unless we do not have a VISTA DVD.
If no, then use system restore going back at least a week before the problem began.

Rich - I will run the command again. And then again. Following the help to the letter.

By the way, I can't open device the way you suggested, but when I went in to the control panel, and after I right clicked on a couple, it updated "NVIDIA n Force" (network adapter) and "LSI PCI-SV92PP soft modem". I hope that is positive.

I will report on the next scannow result. Again, thanks.

The only thing that matters is that the drivers are updated. You are doing great.

I am beginning to think that it could be the graphics card. If that is the case, you just have to buy another. Cannot be just fixed with software changes.

Rich - you'll like this result better.

The DOS response this time is: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations." I had to reboot on its demand and is why I was gone.

So far you have made your guides easily enough understood for a non-techie like me. Thanks for that. What now guru?

My Computer

Heres my diagnosis. If there are no errors and it still does not work, you may have to reset or replace your graphics card.

Thanks very much for your help. One last question.

I have already updated Network adapters and modems.
Is display adapter the same as graphics card? I am trying to upgrade it now. What is a reset? Sorry to be a pain.

My Computer

You are not a pain. I enjoy helping people like you; you seem very nice. I will get the information that you requested.

This is how you reset the card. To be honest, I think that you may have to replace it.

Turn off the power and REMOVE the power plug.

Open the case and find your graphics card.

Before touching the graphics card touch the other hand to the metal case to GROUND yourself.

Remove the screw holding the card in place ( usually on the rear frame )

Gently rock the card end to end until it releases completely.

Reinsert the card with gentle but firm pressure until it seats completely.

Put the holding screw back in.

Put the case cover back on.

Plug in the power cord

Turn on the computer.

Yes, display adapter and graphics card is the same thing.
